Got my 1st Penalty Point :(

Ok so was just arriving at work this morning and took a laneway behind the building so go to collect my wallet from the security desk. Thing is the lane is one way, i crawled into it (i'm on a moped btw) and what do you know Jonny Bike Cop is waiting for me.

Fair enough I was going the wrong way on a one way street (laneway) so i accept the €60 fine and the 1 penalty point but the thing is i havent a clue about the points system.

I'm driving a car 5 years and a bike 2 and have never gotten so much as a warning so now for a question:

Whats the story with penalty points? How long will it stay on my lincense for? And how badly will it affect my insurance?

Did you try using the search facility? It's all been covered before.

3 years on your licence from date of issue, which is not today but sometime in the next 6 months.

    Won't affect your insurance.

Always! in fact i post it on 27 but 19 of them are posted on non-english speaking sites and just cause confusion.

Great I have a stalker, and for that i'm gonna hang a dirty pair of jocks out on my washing line tonight for you to rob ;)

Is there any distinction made between points incurred, same licence I know, for motor cycle vs car offences?

A single point is unlikely to affect insurance but let's say four/five points gained for motor cycle offences would effect bike insurance, should it also effect the person's car insurance as well? I ask because it's unlikely that the OP would have gone up a one way street like that in a car.

Not sure if it would affect my car insurance if i had more but like you guessed i was on the bike.

Unless you have seperate licences for the car and bike, (which you can't), then there is no difference in the points accumulated as far as the insurance company is concerned.

A moped isn't very manly 6th... It's looking less and less likely that you will even get access to the Manly Man forum you proposed, let alone get to moderate it! :D

Its a bit disturbing that anybody in control of a motor propelled vehicle could casually take off down a one way street except by accident. Knowingly driving down a one way street, however isn't something a safe driver (whatever the vehicle type) would do.

The penalty points system is incredibly simple - its all there on Oasis for anybody to read. www.oasis.gov.ie
