music, good music can make a bar great. lots of room to move around and talk, ventilation, clean bathrooms, young people (ie 18 - 23) very NB, laid back atmosphere, interesting stuff on the walls if the conversation runs dry and you need something to talk about (sports photos in particular), oh yes and cheap minerals!! whats the story with that, also just a clean bar in general with lost of nice shiney things, and friendly service.

If the music is great, metal, I will go to that pub no matter how **** the pub is. If the pub is amazingly built and has **** music, similar, If the pints are good, again. Hmm, I don't know what my preferences are.
To be able to hear my friends clearly is good, good bulmers and comfortable seats.
    Students specials. >_>

Good music that is played at a level where people can still talk without having to shout.

    Seats.

Clean toilets which actually have toilet paper in them.

Clean toilets. If they aren't then you had better have something really, really, good to offer that keeps people in your bar.

Good music (defined of course by the crowd you're trying to attract) that isn't so loud that you have to scream over it.

Good beer. I have no idea how it works but people are crying out for 'different' tasty beers.

These are very important to me.
Also, a lack of any completely plastered people, why not have a few without getting obnoxiously drunk?

Doormen who don't look like thugs and who aren't obviously trolling for trouble.

Do all city bars have bouncers in Ireland?

Is it possible to run a bar and when someone has had too much to drink that you ask them to leave without needing a bouncer? Or would that be bad for business?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,382 ✭✭✭petes

    Wimmen and good pints.

Also music at a level were you can actually have a conversation as someone has already mentioned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,534 ✭✭✭sioda

A good pint of Guiness is essential and background music not crap you have to shout over

No seats, just hot tubs. And no roof so you can smoke.

You could call it the Tub Pub.

That is basically Tom Barrys pub up on Barrack street. Thats the best pub in the city in my eyes.

Passed by Sober Lane a few times never really bothered going in. It looks good, and the lighting is done well. Never saw why I should go in though.

Good selection of beer, like the Porterhouse.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 395 ✭✭Dermington

The only place in this city with a good selection of beer is the Franciscan.

A close second are Galvins off licenses.

A good selection of beer is not the same as simply having bottles of tiger and Erdinger in a fridge, in addition to the normal sh!te :D

Quick Service. Barpersons must have the ability to serve more than one person at a time

No Doormen, or Doormen who leave you in when you are pissed

No dress code. Actually no rugby shirts allowed. This is the only dress code

    Good music. Just Loud enough

    Old ****ty furniture

Old Drunk men sitting on the Old Furniture
TV (Proper TV no hanging plasma crap) only turned on when GAA or Soccer is being played. Definately no Rugby.

    Toilets are a good idea

Barrings to range from 1 week to 3 months. Three months for very serious offences such as stabbing staff. Stabbing other customers should recieve a barring of 2 months

Of yeah, Beer. You need beer. And none of that of fancy glass rubbish. Porterhouse my arse!

("Oh taste this beer its from Albania". "Really that is very interesting")

Err, I can't decide if you're taking the piss or not. Maybe it's one of those games where you read every second line or something..?

Another thing would be barmen who actually remember your order :) always a plus in any Pub.

Sorry but where exactly is this? Sounds perfect!
Im dying to go and check it out

Ya i definatly agree with no loud music. You go to a pub for a few drinks and conversation. Nice seating area but i think pubs should be set up so that it is not too difficult to move around in if there is a moderate crowd. Some pubs are just too narrow. Good Quality beer at a competitive price is very important as it can really give a pub a good name. Pool table is good if enough room.

Thing i have noticed about new pubs is they are fecking full of the odd 3 or 4 steps here or there. These can be very annoying if carrying a few drinks. A good beer garden is always a plus, especially with the smoking ban. Personally i prefer the old fashion looking pubs.

And finally bar staff that don't just take orders from one corner or women with big ****
Of course one of the most important things is good company but that's up to the person!

I do think Ireland needs some good real ales. A bar that doesn't just have the usual suspects on tap.

Some good Belgian beers, 'Leffe bruen' is very nice :) 'Chimay' etc. Also some of the good real ales from the UK such as 'Ale Fresco', that's tasty stuff.

    Basically my list is now:

    Good alternative beers
    Seats
Music you don't have to shout over
No scum but likewise no pretentious gits either
    Polite respectful 'door supervisors' (bouncers)

I really like little old man type of pubs like Peters Pub. The barman pours you the perfect pint of Guinness and puts a different shape on the top each time, e.g a shamrock, a smiley face. It's a really nice touch.

Signs of a good pub to me are:

Decent music....Arcade fire, The Beatles, Radiohead, The Pixies....

    Nice lighting....not too bright

    Friendly & efficient barmen

Good looking men who look laid back like there having fun as oppossed to on the hunt....

Plenty of seats & a cool smoking area where you can still hear the music...

Clean toilets with no women handing me soap & chewing gum....wrecks my f*cking head....

you like the Albanian beer, don't you?

making suggestions as to who you would like to see in a pub doesn't really work.
you can't say 'i want this type of person and not the other type'. pubs don't work that way.

all a pub needs is good quality drink and clean glasses. anything else is a bonus.

good music/ different music nights so one night is "no chart", one night is "acoustic" etc - music at a level you can talk at, enough toilets for the ladies nothing worse than 20 girls queuing for the loo, don't even care terribly if the pub is a bit dingy and dusty as long as the atmosphere is nice. Love pubs that throw out the cocktail sausages when you're having friday night drinks after work - it encourages you to stay rather than heading home out of starvation... also love gracious bar owners that shout "how are you girls" etc making you feel all appreciated....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

yeah, my local does the cocktail sausage thing.
a few of the other pubs in the area do sandwiches and stuff too. it's a nice touch.

timevenue have a good set up - different music tastes in different areas of the club and a room upstairs with a pool table - gotta have a pool table!oh and do the right thing and be sure to have a good supply of mickey finns apple sours. In the bathrooms, provide toilet rolls - hate it when theres none left! I love those little touch screen computers with quizzes and stuff that they have in some places. Make sure you have plenty of snacks available for sale too and a bar food menu is always good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

nicely lit, booths, no tv, a chill out area with a not too loud jutbox, plenty of lounge staff, no smoking in the doorways, beer garden, clean toilets with paper rolls - not just hand dryers, no one standing at the sink waiting to wipe my ass.

The chill out area does not mean that the music in the rest of the pub needs to be quiet but some people actually want to talk and have a laugh in the pub.

bar food selection has to be good but not OTT.

Oh and a seperate toilet for "entertaining" ;)

The one thing I *don't* want in a pub is some guitar player popping up at 9pm to murder (my ears and) a set of rock classic tunes with his string-bashing and caterwaulering.

I honestly don't know why pubs go for this stuff? I just leave and go somewhere else whenever they start up. I'd sooner listen to some thumping dance music over a pint than these guys. Thats how bad I find it.

This is exactly what I hate - restaurants and cafes with all this fancy new food - what happened to a normal toastie or steak & chips!?

No TV, no music, a bar with barstools, the owner working the bar, good Guinness, copies of the Irish Times lying around if you're lucky. Ham & cheese toasties. You can get tea & coffee as easily as beer without getting a funny look.

Live music and dj's who play good music - ie no pop or chart music music.

A ban on Irish trad music and the associated blow ins and tourists nodding their heads pretending its great and telling people to be quiet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,668 ✭✭✭nlgbbbblth

Music played by a DJ rather than the bar sound system. The music should not be too loud and preferably themed - i.e. hardcore, indie, electro / hip hop, techno nights.

Lounge staff that don't think they're working in a call centre.

    NO BLACKS IN THE JACKS

If I see them then I leave.
