    rant 1
on saturday in the gym I ran into "The Guy" again. we meet on saturdays only but he looks like he works out a bit so he may havea different schedule to me.
Every bloody sat - it's 5 sets of dumbells for him . once i did count 6.

i haven't needed a set of his yet but the day will come - veins will throb and spleens vent....

    Rant 2

On sunday i was on the threadmill - it the just before half way point when you feel sore and want to quit. When an eastern european couple take the threadmills either side of me. Then he passes her the water bottle across teh front of me while I was at speed.
i'll admit i was kinda dunbfounded and lost for words

    Rant 3
6 times in past 3 weeks the gym has run out of water in the water coolers.....W*ankers

    I understand your frustration

Often I've been on a threadmill and have had two old biddy's on either side shouting the local gossip across. Also, they set a high incline, yet they hang onto the rail for dear life. Kinda defeats the puropose don't you think?

The water coolers in Westwood Clontarf reguraly don't work. Nothing worse than drinking luke-warm water. For €70 a month, I'd expect a bit more

The gym I go to has one Polish girl doing this the whole time. Pretty funny to look at.

The Mardyke used to have constant water problems and out fo the 3 gyms they have only one had a water cooler which might even be illegal.

I'm very impressed with my current gym however. It doesn't really attract the normal idiots.

if your doing weights drinking warm( room tempature) its better for you.

    Cool, duly noted.

But also by water cooler I mean the thing that works like a tap in the gym.

this is one of those prime example of having scientific evidence to back up both sides of the story. Some studies have shown that cold water will be more easily abosrbed than room temperature, some say otherwise. Nothing is conclusive. Drinking colder water will burn more calories than warm will (as the body has to work harder to heat it up) but the difference is negligible. But people to tend to find cold water more appealing, especially if they're already very hot say after or during a workout so they will drink more of it and reap the benefits.

For best results? drink water, lots of it, at whatever temperature you find most palatabe.

The only problem I have with my gym is that the showers are either scaldingly hot or ice cold most days, its beyond frustrating, especially when some days it seems to actually vary between the two in the same shower. Kingfisher in Galway if anyone else knows it...other then that I'm pretty happy :)

Except....I don't think there IS a water cooler in there anywhere....should there be?

Is it not to do with the fact blood will be needed to heat up the water thus leaving your muscles?

I have worked out with both warm and cold water (and various temperatures in between). If there is a difference I would say it's mostly academic (by which I mean it doesn't matter in real life when it comes down to it, a.k.a. it's splitting hairs). Most people have far more important issues holding back their progress.

    To the OP,

re: rant 1, just ask him for the DBs when you need them. Although it's pissy of him to use them all at the same time there's a chance he might be fine with giving them to you when asked.

re: rant 2, that is pretty incredable & dangerous. If you had the balance I wouldn't have judged you for slapping it out of his hand :D

re: rant 3, there outta be a law! (or possibly is a law?)

From a different perspective medically speaking ingesting anything below room temperature comprises the immune system and undermines the performance of the stomach. Resulting in, among other things, poor short term menory, inability to concentrate, loose stools, cockcrow diarrohea, headaches, unrefreshing sleep, etc...

Then again everything's bad for you these days.

Danone Activia (straight from the fridge):D

Independant studies showed that those products offered no benefit. Mostly placebo based. Oh and they are loaded with sugar, for the most part. Not sure about Danone Activia. But if ya got stomach issues I'd be concerned with treating the underlying cause - not the symptom. But I watch too much House. :D
