Has anyone else noticed people or yourselves doing this?
I clearly said BRB(pronounced "burb") in work the other day. Once I called some bird a troll over the phone because she was winding me up.(damn she didnt like that)

And now today in work, one of the techs actually said "AFAIK" pronounced "afake" in a sentance. Everyone was like WTF!
    Except me. I got it.

ROTFLBTCDICAJTTWADBSIFLWTRHITSBKABAYB - Cookie for anyone who can decode this :D

I think like that, but I have to stop myself from saying it aloud. I confessed it to a friend before who looked at me like I had 2 heads, so I didn't mention it again...

Ohh and Burb too on occasion, and I once told my sis that someone was TTC. She pretended to know what I was talking about for ages:o

I know someone who says lulz all the time, simply as lulls. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,866 ✭✭✭Adam

Me and a friend are forever at this, purely as a joke, rather than laughing just saying lol in a really dry tone, or rofl sometimes, and ridiclous leet! Or if someone takes the piss outta ya saying 'fade_to_grey may not reply as he/she appears to be offline.'

    It makes me :)

I said lol in a conversation before, luckily there was a few people and it wasn't noticed.

Nope, don't think I ever have. But I at least I know that when I do use an internet accronym IRL it's a clear sign to me to stop using it so much!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

i rarely use them on the internet. i think i would shoot myself if i ever used one in real life.

In my head I think ROFL, AFAIK, AFAIR and TBH quite a bit. But I've yet to say them aloud. It's only a matter of time though.

I don't really use them online lol, so i wouldn't see myself using them in "real life" lmao.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

I've to bite my tongue to stop myself saying ROFL a few times. Other than that, I have a tendency to actually say the full acronym a lot (that is, I say "As far as I know", and "What the ****", etc). When I'm reading an acronym, I tend not to pronounce the acronym, but rather expand it and say the whole thing. Except for lol, rofl and afaik.

i do however use the full version of several sad internet sayings, like for teh win.

oh, i use OMFG as well occasionally.

i guess im a bit like seamus in that respect.
YAY! *\o/* im a seamus likeabie!

actually, i like seamus a lot.

    I say lol (ell-oh-ell, not loll:D ), roffles, lollers... That's about it.

None of the other acronyms really lend themselves to spoken conversation tbh.

    Roflobster to be honest.

Id be more partial to taking the extra 2 seconds to type out the whole phrase rather than just typing 'tbh' etc...

It is pretty bad when people start answering you back in brbs and ttyl's :/

A girl I know was working as a waitress and when giving the food to a group of people she said " here you go, smily face".

They didnt get it, all her friends heard.

Please say them in my presence, I will laugh so hard.

    I say w00t, I love saying it.
Sometimes 'w00t lol' but only as a joke.

A certain girl I lived with this year said 'tbh' all the time, added a roffle now and again, maybe with a lol or two.
She tries to contain saying it to around people that know what it means though, fails. :P
I think these net acronyms are endearing and funny when my friends say them.
Still, like to poke fun when somebody says, 'it was a good film t b h.' etc.

heh , is roffle an acronym?
    It's how you pronounce rofl.

Same here... including lol, stfu and omg... sometimes I'll hear the dog barking outside at night and I'll think "omg stfu "
The only one I remember actually saying was 'owned'... not really an acronym or special to the internet... but the lame-internet-guy context I used it in made the other person go "owned? wuuh?"

I've heard myself say the letters lol alot lately instead of actually laughing! :o And most of the people I hang out with don't use the net so most of the just look at mean like i've suddenly grown 15 more heads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

yeah probably only say "roffle" for rofl, and lawl for lol, and i'd spell out things like "rtfq" but thats more of a RL acronym. But I think most of the other ones and have to stop myself from spelling them out. Its a problem I accept, and it comes from years of internet abuse, i'm getting help for it, now stfu&lma... plokta plokta

    are u people serious?

my god that makes me cringe

using internet acronyms in everyday speech?

how nerdy can you possibly get!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,400 ✭✭✭✭r3nu4l

Thankfully I've never used any but I might try a few out deliberately just to see does anyone 1) even notice, 2) understand :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,066 ✭✭✭Unearthly

When I read them on the internet, I say them in my head normally. So if I saw "tbh" I would think to be honest.

So therefore if use what the f*ck or to be honest in real life, I say it normally.

oh and the person who said Burb :D
