Is it possible to fix this error without a XP cd-rom?
Is it possible to fix this error with a fix on a pen-drive?

    Thanks in advance

You will probably need the Windows XP cd to use the recovery console option and I don't think a pen drive will help.

Borrow and boot from XP CD. You could try ERD or something instead?
Press R for repair console; with XP CD.
    Then:
    chkdsk /p

    Then:
    fixboot

Thanks, I'll see if I can find a XP cd. I'm in work for the night, don't think IT will be leaving copies around.

Could also remove hard drive , slave it too a working system and run a disk check from Disk manager in XP......

I had this exact problem last week! You can fix it without the CD ROM.

I found out how to fix it from this thread.
