Poker recomendations....

    Righto..

Enthusiastic beginner (ca 10 mths) here who plays a regular home game (and am overall up by about 15 buy ins), on-line on PPP (MTT, and STT's) and had a stab at a MTT in Athlone, so overall have dabbled. I'm on Holiday from the 31st for a fortnight and am looking for any recommendations for

1- A good poker book to accompany me to the beach / pool. Now this could either be a 'system' type book which would be suitable for my level indicated above, or an autobiography type one featuring some of the characters that first drew me into the game, Stuey Unger anyone??..... (As Athlone is a desert for any literature off the beaten track, I'll be forced onto Amazon I guess, so I will need to have made my purchase by the weekend, 22nd July)

2- I'm off to Salou for the fortnight and am aware of the suitably famous casino(s) in Barcelona, but wonder if the game is as widespread as it seems here where every gaff with a roof seems to be hosting a weekly game of one type or another? and is there action to be found?..... or perhaps a jaunt up to Barcelona for a night or two be in order just to dabble in the atmosphere (and undoubtedly surrendering a few euros in the process) of a bricks and mortar Casino (if such a recommendation is forthcoming from fellow boardsters, perhaps a few tips might also be thrown in for good measure).

3- This thread has become lengthy, and is of no particular use to anyone, so apologies if you have got this far expecting some action..... this is the AA of the poker forum... promises much but often fails to deliver..... sorry :)

Well firstly, I hope you enjoy your holiday. Also, there are plenty of good poker book both strategy and otherwise out there. Some good ones are:

Harrington on Hold'em 1 & 2. This is a strategy book spoken about many times here and is targetted at NLHE tournaments.
The man behind the shades (also known as One of a Kind) - Stu Ungar story by Nolan Dalla. Very enjoyable.
The biggest Game in Town by Al Alvarez. Oldie but a goodie anout the 1981 (I think) WSOP main event.
Big Deal by Anthony Holden. Another oldie but a goodie.
The Professor, The Banker and the Suicide King by someone I can't think of right now. A recent book chronicling high stakes one on one cash games between a very rich guy and the top pros. Meant to be a good read, but I haven't indulged myself.

There are loads of others though, including ones I have read that I can't remember now. One peice of advice though, don't bring Sklansky books with you, they will ruin your holiday. Enjoy.

Phil Gordons Little Green Book is excellent. I guess it comes under the "system" category but you can read it cover to cover or just pick it up and flick through a few points.

I brought Chris Moneymaker's book with me to Crete. Great read, he's a bit of a knob himself, but the blow by blow account of the 2003 main event made for great poolside reading. Make sure you bring a couple of others though, 'cause you'll get through it in one day (I couldn't put it down). Just don't bring Sklansky, as 5starpool says it WILL ruin your holiday. lol

Anyone know if HOH3 is available in any Bricks&Mortar bookshops in Dublin?(heading off Saturday so no time to order it on the webbynet).

Was going to try Sklansky as holiday reading material, but ye've convinced me otherwise.

AJ, they had one copy of it in Hodges Figgis in Dawson st, about 2 weeks ago. Give them a call and they'll let you know if it's still there. They've probably the best range of poker books in Dublin anyway (strategy and general), so worth a visit. I always go in before the SE games for a nose around.

It is no longer in Hodges Figgis or at least it wasn't on Saturday

they are going to call me when it arrives but suggested a couple of weeks yet

It wasn't in Easons or Waterspoons either

    Cheers Lazare and Sid,
I'll probably pick up the Stu Ungar book instead - the whole Drink, Drugs and the feeling-of-a-life-being-wasted-thing will probably fit in well with a holiday in the Canaries.

The Stu Ungar book is a great read if a little sad

Oh and I meant Waterstones somewhere in the last post I started thinking of a pint and managed to type the start of the bookshop and the end of a well known pub chain
