Thinking about going to live in America or Canada for a year to see somewhere else besides Ireland and was wondering if anyone had any comments about it. Gonna try and get a job over there, and work (I.T. or something)! Sorry for being so vague but i'm rushing around the place here!

Have you got a degree or any qualifications? Have a look at the Abroad forum. There is lots of information there about working abroad and lots of stories.

I really think you need the visa to allow you to do the work you are looking to do, manual labour you would get away with. I am over here right now, went the J1 working visa route for 18 months, I had to have the company lined up before i left. You can go this way up till your 26 i believe.

You do know that Canada is in America, don't you?

*nods* Yeppers. I'm American, husband is Irish, and we've been living for 8 months off of ONLY MY INCOME because he still can't legally work!! It's absolutley awful, the fees are ridiculous, and unless you live in the city it's gonna be hard for you to find IT work (my husband is in the same field).

This place is crap anyway, lol, I can't wait to get outta here. :D

All that said, if you really want to go to the states just to see what's out there, why not just save some cash and head on over for three months (on the Visa Waiver Program) for a tour? Trust me, it's MUCH cheaper that way. :)

Don't be so quick to move away, do plenty of research before you go. :) OP, its a very long and expensive process to get a visa (unless sponsored by a company) if you want the long and boring details of my story, send me a PM. Best of luck anyway. :D

I'ld much rather get a job over there to be honest and that way i wont have to worry about the money! (money makes the world go round apparently). I've got a degree in IT if that helps, would Canada be a better option?

I think we can assume that they were not refering to the continent of America.

    1. Visa

    2. Research where you are going to go like someone said.

    3. I would recommend reading up on "Home Sickness", what to expect and how to deal with it. It won't hit you as hard if your in the same country that speaks the same language but many people make the mistake of thinking because we speak the same language that the culture is the same.

Im in NYC. I cant understand why its so hard. I look around me and its as if half the third world is here. How are they getting here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 976 ✭✭✭Gandhi

How did those guys get here? They drove their beat-up taxis all the way over!!!

OP, I would check out the stickies in Region->Abroad as Ruu advised. We'd only be repeating the same advice that's on there.

I'd come over on a holiday first though, before you decide to move over. You could decide in a few days that you can't stand the place.

Pick it up with your hands and move it. Simple really...

Or you could try any of the information in the 'Abroad' forum on living and working in other countries... Just a thought. Might get less of the geography pedantry too.
