    Hey all,
I don't know why but I can no longer get the task manager up.

    Pressing ctrl+alt+del does nothing.
Right clicking the task bar and clicking task manager does nothing.

    Where has it gone

    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Quad

    Did you try restarting?

Sounds like you have some spyware or virus running? Have you any spyware cleaners installed? Spybot? Adaware? Windows Defender? If not go download one and run it. Also update your anti virus ssoftware

    I installed ewido.

Then went into safe mood and ran ewido, AVG, ad-aware and Windows Defender - although, as always, windows defender just hung the computer.

I had to reboot manually getting a message saying the disc volume was dirty.

Restarted windows normally and it's still pig slow and there is still no way to get task manager up and running.

Mmmmm, wonder if HD has become kaupt.

Open a command prompt (Start->run->cmd) and type "fsutil dirty query C:"

Does it say if it's dirty or not?

Start->Run and type "taskmgr" in the box, that should bring it up, also from the same Run box try "msconfig" and see if theres anything running in the startup tab that should not be.

Came across this when I had a virus a while back, I can't remember the exact instructions, but a google search will give you the answers.

Windows cannot find 'taskmgr'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, then click Search.

    :(

Your windows is fecked. Try a repair install. If that fails, backup, format and reinstall.

    What OS are you running?

edit: if its xp, try system restore if you have it enabled.

    XP Home Edition with SP2.

    Everything is updated etc.

    System restore is not enabled.

Ran msconfig and some weird things (well, weird to me) appeared (see attached pic).

    Ya think?

Well, at least it's not catastrophic immediately and I can back everything up first I suppose.

Remove or disable those last two entries, look suspicious and restart.

those entries in msconfig look very dodge to me. Prob well infected with a virus. Prob best to format and reinstall. Make sure the files u back up are clean though.

    How do I do that?

I ran hijack this and nothing like that appears. Why is it appearing in MSCONFIG?

How? :( If the anti virus software we have isn't good enough to get rid of this thing then how do I clean the gigs of files I'm going to have to transfer to the other computer here?

btw, it says that C is NOT dirty.

    Log looks clean.

Try running this. I find it good at picking up things that other progs miss.

The only thing you should be transferring is data i.e. music, documents etc. Any system or settings that could cause this shouldn't be moved

Keeps getting an error when it comes to scan. I've taken all the active x restrictions off etc. Ah well.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Gonna start backing up and reinstall the OS tomorrow.
