    Hello techies,

See what you can make of this....

Im on Digiwebs' Metro 3Mb package (3Mb upload and 512 kbps download). I have a 108Mbps Netgear Wireless router and my PC is 4 floors above and on opposite sides of the house, which is a great distance, but still get a great connection due to the strength of the router.

However, not sure of how accurate this test is, but when i go to any of the ISP testers like www.speedtest.ie or www.irishisptest.com, i get an expected average of between 1.8 and 2.6 Mbps download (which is good considering....) and anything from 20Mbps to 350Mbps upload!!! Ive tried this numberous times and each time get crazy figures!!

What the hell like?! Any ideas?

    No idea !

Try this. Connect to my ftp server and send me a file (over 1mb) and see how long it takes to send. I'll let you know how long it took me from my side afterwards.

Sometimes those upload tests just don't work at all. try Ctrl-Refreshing the page or something like that to clear cache.

mbps should not be confused with mBps!

Shouldnt they both have Capital Ms aswell, seen as m is the prefix for milli and M is the prefix for Mega ? :)

Why do I get different results at different times?

Under ideal network conditions, the test will provide virtually identical results every time that it is run (verified in lab conditions). And that accuracy is only possible because the speed test times data transfers down the millisecond (1/1000 second), while most other speed testers can only time data transfers accurate to 1/100 of a second (10's of milliseconds). So the speed test is very precise.

However, in most environments, you will find that you are sharing the network, your Internet connection, and the server you are connecting to, with other Internet users. So unless you are the only person using the network and the server, you can and should expect a little variation in the results.

If you see wildly different results each time the speed test is run, that strongly suggests that you are sharing your network and/or server with too many other Internet users. In other words, the contention ratio is working against you.

If you are using a wireless network (not to be confused with a wireless ISP) the results may vary.

What browsers are you using? I hear irishisptest only works accurately in stinky IE - I get similarly insane results when I try it in Opera. Dunno about Firefox or anything else.

Yes im sharing with a few on a wireless router A N D a wireless provider! That would explain the contention confusion.

    Thanks for your detailed response.
