Choosing a poker alias

I know an alias is hardly the most important aspect in poker but anything 4 an edge :D

Here are some of the common things people do and my thoughts on em

    1. Simply use some derivative of their name - like Sully1975.

    2. where they're from e.g. DublinJackeen.

    3. What they like e.g. happyslappinghowya - hmm just came up with that - has a ring to it :D

    4. A man masquerading as a woman - blondebabe11 - I tried this option once but got fed up when chatting, I chat less these days online so maybe an option for me! but nah i think i'll give that one a miss.

    5. Masquerading as somebody from another ethnic group i.e. I like this one I mean it's bad to generalise when it comes to things like this but certain ethnic groups do play differently.

    6. An alias that makes people think the opposite about what you are - and I'm not talking about fish24-7 or anything obvious like that - I mean it's obvious that somebody with this alias at the very least does not believe they are a fish... though I once did c somebody called newbiexxxx and by god were they a newbie!

Anyways i'm thinking more of an alias like funfunfun, rolldadice or blackjackguy ... sorry not great examples but u get da picture I hope.

    7. an alias that makes you think about ur game - e.g. PatientZenMaster, Onethingleadstoanother, Forgetlasthand

    8. An alias which states your intent in an in ur face kinda way e.g. Iknockoutu(actual alias of finnish pro patrik anderssen or s.thng like it anyway) , iwanturchips etc. or similar an aggressive attitude name like Aligatorteeth or DragonFang

    Personally i don't like 1. 2. or 3. though I like da one i came up with for no.3.

I think 7. gives free info to the opposition that u r a thinking player.

I like 5 and 6 - Anything to deceive the opposition!

I think I kinda like 8. as well as - there is no deception involved here of course - but a statement of intent has a certain amount of I dunno aura for want of a better word and perhaps might even encourage you to live up to the name - on da flip side it makes u sound arrogant and people will want to give u ur comeuppance. Still though I think I like.

So what are peoples thoughts, anything else to add to this etc.

Has someones alias ever had an effect on how you played against them?

Honestly, never gave it much thought
where I play the majority of my game I use my real name
everywhere else Im DeadParrot or some variation.
There may be something in chosing your avatar on stars
some peoples avatar nearly set me on tilt straight away ;)

    I never give it thought.

I do remember Niall O'Callaghan saying that displaying the french flag as his avatar on PPP has seen a lot of very loose calls by americans....

So maybe somethin like FDUSA or IranianJihad might do the trick

Not after I have played with them for a while but initially yeah absolutely - if i c an alias like greatbigfish for the 1st time at least I know they think they're not a fish though they still might be of course.

when somebody uses a dull name it also makes me think they are dull themselves - and again a generalistion I know some gr8 playsers just can't be arsed to think of a fancy alias.

Also when I c a chinese name - i think crazy gambler - and how often is this true? A lot!

So yeah it does effect my initial attitude at least, it's the only info I have to go on besides their location (if I c gothenburg, lulea etc - I know I got a swede and have a default poker respect for em. if i c there from some other countries which shall remain nameless it puts me on fish alert!).

So yeah I acknowledge u can't put 2 much store in an alias but I don't think it's totally irrelevant either.

Lol that reminds me in one of my ahem more childish moments I called myself AlQaedaRock on Everest poker to wind the yanks up - bit of a doubly crap choice of site to do it on though as I nvr play on that site anyway and they're not that many yanks on it anyway.

FDUSA would go over they're head i think ;)

There was a guy who used to play 5/10 on prima called Osama(some number) and he use3d to get abused at the table, but the action he got was unreal.

Osama actually happened to be his name as well so it wasnt particulatly to rile americans.

Yeah hehe - that could indeed v da way to go - I had an ulterior motive for making this post i must confess :o - I get to change my alias on party in just over a week - was thinking of picking a chinese name but maybe Osama etc is da way to go, wind the americans up - got 2 be value in that :D

I really like going with an image type name to get you action, like flushdrawLVR, or luckyrouletteplr.

fishNchips is the best name Ive seen so far. I liked Gambletron too when I saw it.

I thought it was supposed to be the name of your first dead pet and your mothers maiden name.????

I don't even read their names tbh. If somebody lets a name affect how they play I think it's wise they hit the little x in the top right, but I'm sure people do this.

My suggestion for you off the top of my head is Daddyorchips.

Kinda getting OT, but I remember there was a thread on 2+2 a couple of months ago about the best Poker aliases they'd seen (I had a look for it, but couldn't find it :(), and one that I remember that I thought was very humorous was "TheBigBlind" on Stars with an Avatar of Stevie Wonder :)... I thought it was very clever.
