    Hey all,

I want to perform a daily backup of my server.

I don't know whether to get a REV Drive or an External HD.

Is there a big speed difference between REV Tapes and an external hd?

The REV drive and external drive are both going to be connected via USB, I presume, so if your server is USB 1.1, then I doubt you'll notice a difference between the two. On USB 2.0, you might/will.

Anyway, even if you did, here's my argument for the REV drive and against the external drive.

Because the REV drive uses removable media, you're not limited to X number of backups, depending on how big your drive is and the amount of data you're backing up.

Also, if the drive itself fails, you can always replace it and know you're disks, which you will no doubt be taking off-site, are safe and will work in another REV drive. With the eternal HDD, are you really going to wait for the backup to finish and then take the drive home every evening? If you are, then the HDD is a viable option.

I know the REV drive is capacity-limited, but it's obviously Ok for what you want if you're considering it.

I suppose it boils down to how you'd be affected by losing the server and data.

How much do the REV backup option cost ? Any links would be nice.

    Hey,

The REV system costs around 320 euro for the external drive and the 55 per tape. A tape can hold up to 90gb.

The hd doesn't come with backup software whereas the rev comes with backup software by Computer Associates.

i bought the autoloader 280 (rev drive) and so far its being a pain in the arse to configure. We had bought Backup Exec (with exchange, sql & sharepoint agents) which is now a waste of time as it doesnt support the 280 as an autoloader.

I'm going to give it another go tonight so I'll let you know how I get on.

but if you dont have any backup software and are happy enough to change drives each night (with the single loader) then I'd say go for it.
