    Hi folks,

    strange one this....

I have an old PC - its a P1 - 200mmx that I use for mucking around with. It always fired up first time until recently when I switched it on to a black screen. I presumed the CMOS battery was probably dead & replaced it, but no good. It wasn't even getting to the stage of sending a signal to the monitor or recognising the drives.

anyways, after much fiddling, re-starting & clearing the bios through the dip switch, it came back to life.

Worked for a few months and now the same again. Its a brand new battery in it, but no matter what I try, can't get it back to normal. Occasionally, it fires up & has lost its bios settings, I reset them & work happily for the day, even switching off & on again, but the minute its switched off & left overnight, I have a devil of a job getting it restarted.

This is where I am now - I've tried everything, but just cant get to the bios screen or windows. Definitely power there as the fan & drives are spinning, but just nobody home !

    Any thoughts ???

Can you hear the hard drive spinning up and is there the LEDs coming on the CD-ROM?

Hard disk is definitely spinning up, but thats just the power rather than recognition by the bios - not sure about lights on the cdrom, but the drawer opens ok when you press the button.

Could it be the Graphics Card?

Have you got a spare hard drive you could check in it? Check all cables again and reseat the RAM also.

Dont think its the graphics - albeit its an onboard card, I would have presumed the hard disk or floppy would still have been recognised.

I've swapped out the hard disk with same result, even disconnected the drive, taken out the memory & still I get power but no bios action.

Wierd thng is, its is just as likely to suddenly come to life again & then die once more...I just wish I could track down the porblem

All I can think of is to strip the computer down to nothing and try each device one by one and you might get something.

Well true to form, this is posted from the P1, now back to life & no reason for it.

I just know when I switch off tomorrow - it will be dead again.....
