I have come to the time when I must make a decision. I will soon be working as a consultant, and have the choice, work for someone else, or work for myself

If I work for someone else I will have security, structure, rest at night, 40hr weeks, the ability to get a mortgage, a constant cash flow, little control over the work I do, little motivation,

If I work for myself I will have freedom, potential to earn more, stress, sleepless nights, worry, complete control over the work I do (ish), 100hr weeks, trouble financially, complete motivation, excitement, potential to grow a business.

While I think each element of each is really important, very often money is an issue.

So the question is, if you want to start your own business, so you are taking on risk, how much more should you aim to be paid for the privilege.

Now of course it will probably be a changing number. In year 1 you may earn nothing, and in year 10 you may be a millionaire, but that is when you are building a new product based business

For example… if you were a senior architect, and were starting up your own practice, how much more should you be aiming to earn????

Similarly, if you are going to employ someone, how much profit should you make on them?
