I have avast antivirus installed on my machine and I havn't been able to update definitions since I got my router.
I don't have any idea what port I should forward and it's not in the documentation.

Does anyone know of something I can download which will tell me program X is trying to get out through port X?

Port fowarding is a means of allowing someone/something on the internet to reach into your PC. To get AV updates you reach out from your computer to the server with the updates, it doesn't reach into you. Therefore you don't need portforwarding enabled to to get AV updates.

It's possible that you have a software firewall installed on your machine that is preventing the AVAST application from reaching the internet, but that's not a portforwarding issue either.

I have zone alarm installed but it's not being blocked by that. Any idea?

Nope. You could try uninstalling and re-installing - if it's a setting somewhere that might help.
