If I have a gif or a jpg, is there way I can search to see if that file has already been published on the internet? cheers

Well you can trying using the Advance Image Search in Google images, that allows you to search for a JPG, GIF or PNG format among other things.

Probably not what you're looking for, but there's an industry out there for copyrighting & tracking image use, e.g. http://www.digimarc.com/
