Was considering going over near the end of the year.. anyone have any experience of cheap accommodation over there?

I'd settle for somewhere away from the city centre as i've seen the prices there.. average €300 - €350.. but preferably not too far away so that it involves an hour long train journey to get into the city in the morning.

    Cheers!

This one here? Gave them a shout anyways.

    Other possibilities welcome!

EDIT: Got an e-mail back from them...

Room with one double bed*: from US$275.00 per night + tax (13.63% + $3.50 per night)

    Ouch!

it's all about the time you go really.
November and December is very expensive for hotels in NYC.
I usually stay in the Sheraton Manhatten but we have friends who live in Queens so sometime we take the cheap option and stay on their sofa!

I got the Sheraton Manhatten for $700 for 3 nights last March but it is about $350 a night in peak season.

Packages are probably the best way to go in peak season.

Just back from a week in NYC. We stayed in the Red Roof Inn Manhattan.
A double room for 7 nights came in at just over $1400.

Central location between 5th avenue and broadway on W32nd street. The rooms are basic but clean and tidy. Continental breakfast is also included which we didn't see with alot of other hotels. Compared with other hotels its quite cheap and I'd use them again for a NYC trip.

I stayed at the Wellington Hotel last October and it was about €160 a night for a double room. Going back in February and it's ceaper, about €130 a night. It's on 55th St and 7th Ave so it's fairly well located, 20 minutes from Times Square. There's a subway entrance around the corner.

We stayed at the Larchmont Hotel last October. Room was decent and the location is superb. The only compromise is that you don't get your own bathroom/shower. There are a few on every floor. We never had to wait and they were always clean.

I can't remember what we paid but I know it was a really good rate for NYC. Have a look at tripadvisor.com for other options and reviews.

Went there last january and stayed a few days in hotel stanford which was cheap enough in Korea town, v. central but only ok.

However spent a few days in the hyatt regency in New Jersey (just across the river from manhattan) and that actually was cheaper than the stanford and much much better (4 stars).

The way to get cheap rates for this is to go to www.hotwire.com and register there. They let you book hotels based on stars and location, not name.

So if you go and look for hotels in New Jersey (either Jersey City or Hoboken) and check the rates for the 4 star hotel there then that is most likely the hyatt.

This allowed me to to book 3 nights in a huge room with kingsize bed huge tv etc for $85 per night (thats dollars). The path train goes from right outside the hotel (24 hours) so you're at WTC station in less than 5 minutes. Very handy and very cheap:)

    Cosmopolitan Hotel - Tribeca

Excellent prices & good reviews (always check tripadvisor before you book anywhere).

Stayed here last year and was very happy. Pokey rooms, but clean, cool, comfortable, and no trouble at all. Subway literally beside the hotel. Twas a good choice.

darn! My cheap hotels town near new york have been found LOL

There aren't any hotels in Hoboken (birthplace of Frank Sinatra for those who care. He didn't) that I'm aware of

As for Jersey City, here is the current rosta:
Hyatt 4* - on the waterfront. Full service hotel - next door to the path and between the Harborside and Exchange Place Light Rail (imagine LUAS) stops
Candlewood Suites 2.5* - self catering ish - close to the waterfront - about 10 - 15 minutes walk to either Newport Pavonia or Exchange Place PATH stations - near the Harborside Light Rail stop
Doubletree 3* - Full Service with 'interesting' friday night entertainment. About 5 minutes walk to Newport Pavonia PATH, and right next door to Harsimus Cove light rail stop
Marriott Courtyard 3* - Full service - ontop of Newport Pavonia PATH, about 5 minutes walk from the light rail stop at Newport Center mall
Ramada 2* - on Tonnelle Avenue. Er, probably don't want to walk from there
Motor lodge 1* - This has invisible writing on it. With an ultra violet lamp you will be able to read "avoid this place". It has the distinction of being right on top of the entrance to the Holland Tunnel (which goes under the Hudson River which seperated New Jersey from New York)

There are supposed to be another two hotels on the way. One will be near Grove Street PATH, gawd knows where the other one will be

If I can't get the Doubletree or Hyatt cheaper, my preference is to stay at the Candlewood Suites and travel from there... free car parking and free internet probably have something to do with my choice(!).

I've stayed at the Doubletree, Hyatt and Candlewood numerous times. Wifey, expense unit 1 and myself lived in Jersey City for 6 years before returning, er, home, and I go back on a fairly regular basis to see clients and drinking companions (always in that order(!))

Stayed in a hotel on West 76th Street called the Milburn Hotel in May. €960 (incl. taxes) for 5 nights. What I loved about the room was that we had a little kitchenette so we didn't have to eat out for every meal (obviously eating out in NYC is an experience, but it was good to have the option of just sitting down with a bowl of cornflakes ;)
Guess it would be more expensive at the end of the year, but it's definitely worth checking out.
