Well today rte.ie is streaming the Munster football final over the internet (it isn't on TV). But when you try to access it using NTL BB in Dublin, it says that you can't watch it because your IP address is outside of Ireland.

Looking at the trace routes NTL is routing the connection to RTE through Manchester. This isn't unusual a lot of Irish traffic is routed through Manchester.

FFS NTL/UPC, you are now and Irish company, you are members of INEX, as are RTE, can't you sort out your house and peer with RTE and route all Irish traffic through INEX. What is the point in being an INEX member otherwise.

If NTL don't do something about this within one week, I'll be send letters of complaint to RTE, GAA and various Irish newspapers, it won't be good press for NTL/UPC in Ireland.

I still advise sending an email to NTL about it, so that they sort it for future.

BTW non of the streams and highlights on the sports page are available to NTL customers.

And I also can't believe that there is horse racing on RTE1, that the Leinster match is on RTE Radio 1 (it is already on RTE2) and that there is no minute by minute score tracking on either RTE.ie or GAA.ie, amateurs.

works on BT Ireland okay, and yeah NTL should sort out their IP issue

on the other hand NTL customers can access UK-only BBC streams which is rather nice considering the BBC is ahead of RTE in the online streaming stakes.

I think it is something to be might be fixable at RTE's end - they might be able to add the ntl Ireland IPs to their permitted list.

RTE shouldnt need to do this though. NTL should sort out this themselves as other apps/sites will also be affected by it.
On the other hand, NTL people can watch BBC streams I assume which other ISP customers can't.

By the way, the stream of the match was excellent and the perfect result also..up the rebels.

It's got nothing to do with peering, surely? They're using IP addresses allocated to the UK, not Ireland.

Not that I have any interest in sport, but I can view all the highlights on the sports page. I'm on NTL.

is there no way you can work around this. I can watch lost from the american abc website by changing proxy settings so they think im in america but in not really.(same for bbc 5 live) This isnt illegal by the way. you just go to tools-> internet options->connections->lan settings. I cant figure out the rte workaround yet- does anybody have any ideas?

You'd need an Irish proxy server that supports rtsp streams.

Where could I get more information on doing this? Any recommended sites for proxies and how it all works?

I had the same problem with UTV broadband. I mailed RTE about it and in fairness they responded to me within about 10 mins. They apologised and said that it was out of their control for that match, but asked for my IP address so that they could add it to their database for future games.

I'm surprised about that - can you post your IP address (just XX out the last part of it).

I got a similar mail. I am very impressed at their proactive response. When I respond I will ask that others are included in the 'actually in Ireland' list.

As far as I could find out there aren't any open Irish proxies, or at least none that are advertised. I was trying to find one so that I could order a game through Steam and had no luck at all. Ended up just getting on an eircom connection instead.

yes its good NTL registers us as within the UK so we can watch BBC, ITV and Channel 4 streams, all of which are better than RTE!!

PLUS: if you email RTE with your IP address & ISP they will "add" you to their list of addresses within Ireland - I got the same response as above

    WELL DONE RTE
