anyone come accross these big red/orange flying insects look like a large daddy long legs type thing, but about 5" in size. seen them mostly in late mornings around Lucan/Lexlip/Celbridge areas. Hope they dont bite! see if I can get a picture of one later.

Never seen a dragon fly before?? Used to be common as much Mobby are you pretty young? I remember some massive ones when i was younger... 7" long and about 10" wingspan

By the way a daddy long legs is a spider... i think you are reffering to a crane fly or as the Americans call them.. Mosquito hawk. :D

It's understandable. I've never once seen them in the city. In fact, the only time I've encountered them is in those gardens in Powerscourt and the gardens near the National Stud.

Exactly, in my 28 years on this earth I've only ever seen one, when I was about 10, hovering over my mothers garden pond.
    Never seen another.

the vast majority of adult insects are "flying insects".

I saw tons of green ones in Lough Dan last week. In flight, in groups they fly like a showl (sic) of fish. Very beautifull indeed.

Hang around any river or canal and you'll find loads of the beggers. Beautiful creatures.

They seem to live around water, I use to spend a lot of time at summer around the canal and there was always loads. Has anyone noticed that the flying ants that we had an investation of last year are back. Saw thousands of them today. Last year I drove into my mates job, had a chat for ten minutes and when I looked at the car it was covered in them. I don't remember them when I was growing up,would they be a result of out climate hotting up.....apartently.

They always appear during these hot summer days. I'll never forget our garden being swamped with them 12 years ago. Most retarded creatures ever - must have been hit by them at least 50 times yesterday evening, each and every one flying head on directly into my face whilst I was cycling home.

Yup water is where to find them.... My dad has a lovely big garden in palmerstown. Good size pond in it. Usually he gets some coming by in their travels.

Mythical creature :D Drop the "fly" from the word and there is your mythical creature :D
