Hi, wasn't sure where to post this so if here isn't it feel free to move it!

We're using 3G for broadband! So if you have a 3G signal then it's possible to get broadband in pockets of broadband neglected areas!

I'm just gonna link to the post because DH has answered some questions over there.

We're in a 3G area that can't get broadband :) I've convinced we're living in a hole surrounded by trees! lol Because 3G doesn't require line of sight it's perfect for us.

Our only alternative was Satellite broadband and the set up alone was going to be €1100 then €89 pm!

Anyway, I just thought I'd pass on the info :)

I hope you have deep pockets, 3G is very expensive!

I know Vodafone have a deal for 50 a month unlimited, but there is a goodwill cap on it of something like 3Gig

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 471 ✭✭Debracd

No we checked and checked and there is no cap good will or otherwise. There is a fair usage policy alright but vodafone said it's more so that people don't download huge files(movies etc) But it's unlimited to surf.

This has been covered in a coupe of threads, here in
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054961008 and on Ireland Offline in some greater depth - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054945911

A 5G "cap" or "fair usage allowance" is fine for the vast majority of internet users - if everyone was downloading hundreds of gig a month, nobody would get broadband for €30. For anyone who is switching to 3G from dialup, Vodafones flat rate package is moderately expensive way to get broadband.

You can even get a 3G router to share this service between PCs in a house.

Thanks for that Foxwood :) We got the router and it seems to be working well!

    What direction from Dunshaughlin?
I thought we were in a hole in the coverage out this way!

Vodafone has a coverage map on their site. If you're in a yellow zone you have reasonable hope of getting the service. The smart thing is probably to borrow a Voda 3G phone to get some handle on the signal strength in your location. From what I understand, both the data card and the Linksys router have better aerials than a phone so they will work better than a 3G phone.

They definitely have better signal blaster! We get 2-3bars gsm with our vodafone phones, but 4-5bars 3G signal with the card and router!

    is that up and down?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 471 ✭✭Debracd

Well it doesn't really drop by much, but doesn't go much higher either if ya know what I mean? Think the lowest we got so far was 358, so that's still almost 10 times better than our dial up connection!

Nope. I ran a speed test yesterday in 3G coverage, and got about 250-350k down and 64k up.

Is it possible to have vodafone 3g inetrnet on a standard PC or do I need to switch to a laptop.

I'm currently on 16.8 - 4 miles out of Kildare Town - a basic e-mail can take 10 - 15 minutes to download!!!! 3G service on the phone is 4 bars.

It's cheaper than buying a laptop with a cardbus slot.

3G is going to be more expensive that most other forms of broadband, but it's actually cheaper than ADSL was when eircom first introduced it, so if it's the only broadband option available to you, you just have to decide how badly you want it.
