The Israeli-Arabian Mess?

Ok so I'm gonna presume every one knows the deal with the Israelis bombing Lebanon because Hisballah(sc) kidnapped two of their soldiers. So I thought i'd post a really brief history of the mess over there over the last 50ish years (as taken from a tabloid newspaper but is suprisingly pretty acurate).

1948-1949: Israels independence on May 14th, 1948 triggered the first full-scale war. The Arab states opposed the formation of the state of Israel on what they considered Arab territory. Soon after Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq invaded Israel. In January '49, Israel isolated Egyptian forces and demanded a ceasfire, which was agreed apon. During this time roughly 400,000 Palestinians fled Israel and settled along the Israeli border as refugees.

1956: Israel began to suspect the Arab nations of planing a war against them. Egypt made moves to expel British and French troops from their territories because they were alligning themselves with Israel. October 29th Israel launched a combined air and ground offensive against Egypts Sinai peninsula. On november the 6th a ceasefire was called after Israel had captured the Gaza strip and Sharm el Sheikh as well as other strtegic points. Israel withdrew from thses points in 1957 under UN orders.

1967: After several border excursions from both sides (Israeli and Arab) and due to mounting tensions Israel launched a massive air assault cripplinf Arab air capabilities. Once air superiority was gained Israel took control of the Sinai Peninsula again and also claimed ground in Jordan.

1973-74: On 6th October 73 (Yom Kippur, a Jewish Holliday) the Arab nations launched a two pronged attack, Egypt attacked from the east andSyria advanced from the north. Israel repelled the attacks and in the last hours claimed ground on the West Bank of the Egyptian suez canal. A cease fire was signed soon after.

1982: In this year Israel launched a massive operation to destroy all PLO (Palestine Liberation Front) bases in south Lebanon. Palestinians accepted a US-sponsered deal to leave Beirut and travel to neighbouring Arab countries.

1985: Israel withrew from Lebanon but maintained a buffer zone along the Lebanese border.

1985-2005: A variety of minor acts were perpatrated on all sides.

2006: After the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier Israel after having withdrawn all forces from the Gaza Strip resumed offensives on it. After the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers ( by hizballoh (sc) ) Israel launched a campaing against Lebanon, hitting airports and road out of the country, effectively cutting them off from the rest of the world and then carrying out tactical surgical strikes on civilian targets. Currently Israel are calling on Lebanon, Syria and Iran to disarm Hizballoh(sc) or face military action.

    Duck and cover.

So what are your opinions, whos right? whos wrong? and whos pulling the strings?

It is in the right forum, I'm sure its well represented in the political and conspiracy theory forums, but this is a general after hours topic, all after hours topics I'm sure could be put in other more specialised forums as I'm sure you realise being so quick and idiotic but like I said... dot dot dot

For opinions see the politics forum where we regularly discuss Israel. There is a thread active at the moment on the latest developments.

This correct forum business is really getting on my tits, does it really matter that much? If he posted it in Television, Dance/Electronic or Film I could see a point, but do these threads really disrupt your viewing of boards that much guys? It was like the zero tolerance of anything football related during the WC- relax ffs! Perhaps he wants the man on the street view, rather than that of the more clued up regs of the Politics forum.

Anyway, in a sentence, Israel has no real right to exist anyway. What happened during WWII was indeed awful, but the notion of people returning to "their" land after 2000 years and kicking out the natives makes as much sense as the Irish going back to Austria and Norway (the homelands of our Celtic and Viking ancestors) and kicking them out on similiar grounds. When it comes to terrorists attacking civillians, the violence against settlers in the West Bank is, imho, pretty much justified. Not content with stealing the 1948 land they have the gall to go in and take the best parts of the small strips of land they allowed them to live on. By living here they make themselves combatants to be quite honest, and deserve anything they get (most of all the Americans and Brits who settle there. Disgraceful)

In that case we could just get rid of the other forums and just have one big free for all in afterhours. It's clearly a political thread. There’s nothing stopping anyone posting their opinion in the politics forum, it’s just that that opinion might get challenged and it’s less likely to descend into wild ignorance. Better to have an informed discussion than a see who can post the most uninformed and outrageous statement contest. Most threads of this kind I think tend to get locked and deleted when they stay in after hours anyway. If you keep the tone civil and don’t insult any other posters there’s nothing stopping anyone posting in politics.

Why read a tabloid when you can get more reliable information from another source?

This part of the world has been at war for thousands of years. There are no simple solutions. There is a forum for this and related opinions and debates, where an audience awaits you.

I think you are dead right. Perhaps the OP was more familiar with AH and the general questions about life it poses. And more familiar with the people here.

I am sure it will get some replies, more of the normal nature as you suggest. Rather than having to take out the dictionary every fith word :/

How dare they interrupt our frivolity on AH with something so grave and serious!

and perhaps if The Gopher would like to spend his days moving threads about the place, he should become a mod instead of complaining like a little girl as usual.

closed. theres threads on it in politics. add to that conversation if you want to discuss it.
