Thanks very much for linking to that. I found it a breath of fresh air in this stagnant sports-orientated forum and for me the interviewer and topics are more-or-less in line with the spirit of classical martial arts as I am studying them although I don't practice Karate.

Good to hear about McCarthy too, who's articles I enjoy a lot and I think any martial artist can enjoy too, irrespective of style.

Key points I found of interest
    - training with Don Draeger
    - studying the "anthropology of martial arts"
    - going from childhood interest (samurai etc) to adult in-depth study
    - difference in okinawan karate to western karate
    - history of karate as an immergent single tradition from multiple cultures
    - grappling in karate
    - influence of katori shinto ryu swordsmanship on his non-sports style of karate, no rules, non-competitiveness etc
    - the emphasis of kata in karate, in modern times, as form of human movement for physical fitness - to karate's detriment. This is very important and i think it shines a light on why most people view kata in general as being static when in my experience it's not like that at all. It seems P.McC has discovered the real nature of kata as he descibes in his description of 2-person kata training. Note natural use of MMA buzzwords.. functional, resistance, non-compliance etc. Even those TMA naysayers here can't argue with that

I really feel that P.McC isn't discovering anything new but going back to how kata are originally practiced before modern influence, and i think he does a good job of inferring that himself anyway. It's this modern influence that i believe gives people the wrong impression of kata today... and impression i've seen here on discussions of kata.

hehe, it's been more active then ever man. It's all about supply and demand. If no one wants to post about x it doesn't get posted. Try be a bit more proactive about your interests rather than trying to put others down.
