You could try asking in the Shop->Wanted Adverts->Computer Hardware, you might get a better response there. People reguarly are throwing away/selling older computers.

I say if you went to your local recycling plant they will have a good load of pc's lying around that you could salvage....

Are you allowed to do that?? Just go to a recyelling center and take any PCs they have lying around??

As a student you can apply for grants in certain townships for a computer to help with your studies and now is the time they are taking applications for funding in September. Are you living with your parents and/or in receipt of any sort of grant or social welfare payment?

do you have to be a college student to avail of these grants or can you still be in secondaty school??:)

if you pop into some education institute and ask they may have one lying around that's of no use

Third level or on an appropriate aspiring avenue to be so. Those in disadvantaged situations inclusive but not exclusive to geography will be looked upon with more generous eyes. A computer is not essential kit for secondary level education. I get the impression that the OP will be studying computers in some shape or form.

No use - I was in UCC 4 years ago and whilst working on an open day I found a room FULL to the brim with computers that had just been replaced. I was told they'd just be left there to rot. I asked why don't they just let the students take them?

Was told that they wouldn't do that under any circumstances. To 'give away' assets was a time consuming and complicated process. Easier to just let them sit there and rot.

    What a waste

Thats UCC for ya, buy up half the surrounding property then turn it into a Ghosttown during the summer or just let it rot so the locals just move on and let you expand even more. IIRC Brenard Allen was correct when he said: They (UCC) have done more to damage the fabric of that area of the city than any developer, or words to that effect.

Leaving PCs to rot is a fav pastime of most large institutions, just couldn't be arsed disposing/distributing them when they would still be useful.

Such a waste. Large public institutions should be the first ones to adopt a policy of reducing waste and maximising the value gotten out of things like computers.

It's common now but even 5/6 years ago having any sort of computer was a luxury. I can remember queing for 40mins to get a computer in Boole Basement when I had an essay to write up.

And the thought of rooms being filled with computers that would have been well capable of word processing was just irritating as hell.
