Saw an interesting report on a German business programme just there ...

Apparently it takes 50 man hours to build a VW Golf at a cost of € 48 per hour.

Audi have managed to build the almost identical A3 in 30 man hours @ € 37.

Yet the Audi is so much more expensive.

They must be minting it :D:D

(they didn't disclose their material costs, unfortunately)

The current Golf is very complicated to build, the revised model will be a lot simpler.

Seenashow it's based on the Golf ...

The Audi should be cheap, the technology on the base 1.6 engine was paid for in the 80's

    How come?

Apparently some of the processes (welding etc) for manufacturing the Golf are nedlessly complicated, taking over twice as long to build as a Corolla. and while the new one will borrow heavily from the existing Golf (no major mechanical changes) - the new one will be far more simple and adaptable, allowing more body styles.

Whether VW can cut more corners, and still have a saleable car remains to be seen

To compare a standard 1.6 Golf to its A3 equivalent you would imagine theres alot more work to the A3. The Mk5 Golf in my opinion is very bland. Even the GTi as good of car as it is could have been a bit more inspiring.

The A3 wins hands down in the styling and interior dept. Seen as both cars are based on the same platform what other then bodywork and interior could have them working near on twice the amount of time building the Golf?
