Wardriving question

I've been experimenting with hacking my own home network through wireless means. Installed linux and kismet, and the aircrack suite of tools.

My wireless card is an Intel 2200, built into my Dell Laptop. Kismet will support it fine but the other tools, WEP cracking tools etc only tend to support PrismII cards as far as I can see.

However, most of the manufacturers seem to be moving away from PrismII so is it still the case that aircrack etc will only support them? For some reason these details are difficult to find on google, i've a feeling a lot of articles etc are outdated.

My problem is that I could try to get my hands on a DWL-650 or other old PrismII based card but will the card support newer technologies like WPA and WPA-PSK?

Can anyone who has messed around with this recommend me any cards that could facilitate an external antenna or be modified to do so?

DWL-650 works fine with WPA and WPA-PSK

Ideally you want a crad supporded by the madwifi drivers that way your life gets alot easier in both support fow wpa using wpa_supplicant.

You also have the advantage of bein able to patch the driver source to prevent deauth packets if u plan to play around on ur own lan.

If ur looking for tools wepcrack ,cowpatty, airreplay, chopchop and others have varying support for card.

It may be worth the investment in a prism or atheros based card as there nice and cheep on ebay and there are versions with sma connectons for external antennas which are dead handy for wardriveing.

I have a similar question. How do you keep someone from hacking/cracking a WiFi router on WPA? And if you are cracked, how would you know?

I have a similar question. How do you keep someone from hacking/cracking a WiFi router on WPA?

Dont use a password use a strong passphrase. Dont use wep unless you want to make life easy for someone.
    how would you know?

In theory if they remain in passive state you wouldnt. WPA is crackable if you have a crap password and someone has way way too much time on there hands.

If they do go active and are nice enough to use a mac address that is not one of urs itll turn up on your router logs and u should be able to spot it.

More than that youll be looking for stuff like snort or IDS tools, Sniffers, Kismit......(How much effort ur willing to put in? post back on that seriously?)

Someone told me about AirSnare for windows but unsure if its just a mac black/whitelisting tool as i havnt looked at it as its windows.

It greatly depends on ur needs.
