Wrist sprain?

    Hi,

I had a pretty nasty fall off a skateboard 2 weeks ago and sprained my wrist quite badly (there was a lot of swelling on the back of my hand).

Now my wrist seems to be ok, i have full movement but when i put pressure on it (e.g a push up) it feels really weak and is very painful. I've checked my scaphoid by pushing between those tendons by my thumb and it seems to be fine. There does seem to be some pain (but not a lot) if i press the area just below the ball of my wrist - could this be a damaged tendon? There is also some pain at the bottom of the palm of my hand, it feels like there is a lump under the skin if I push on it.

Has anyone had anything similar to this? Any idea how long it could take to heal? It's really annoying cos I just got my new surfboard right before it happened and now I can't go surfing..

If you fell on an outstretched hand which is most probable. This would have caused an over-stretch/strain on the inside of the wrist and if the fall was hard enough can cause a bone bruise between the 1st row of the carpals and their articulation of the ulna and humerous on the back of the hand. The strain would have caused some damage to the soft tissue. This in general takes 3-4weeks to heal on it's own. A bone bruise takes 6-8weeks to heal.

A push up exercise mimics the position your hand was in when it was injured, thus doing a push up will exacerbating any underlying symptoms. Give it another week or so before you try that again.

Yes it could be but it also could be anything.

The hook of the hamate lies there and there is a branch of the radial nerve that lies over it, firm palpation of it in a non injured person isn't nice anyway

Bottom line is that even though it is getting better you are still concerned about it. That is the point where you go to a professional i.e. physiotherapist, doctor, sports rehabilitator or athletic trainer to get it professionally checked out.
