Does anyone know if there's some kind of combination ticket available that would allow travel from this part of the world to Japan and a couple of stops in SE Asia and then return?

    Any help/advice much appriciated.

The 'Dreamtime' or 'Dreamtime plus' tickets offered by Qantas allow five stops from Ireland out to Asia I think, they don't require that you travel the whole way around the world and cost about €1500. You could ask your travel agent about these or look them up on the web!

Could be difficult - I went for a week's holiday in Thailand a few yrs ago and wanted to continue to Japan to see friends. No consolidated tickets available for realistic money. I ended up buying the thailand-japan leg from Ireland by fax with a bangkok travel agent I was recommended. All worked well and was over a thousand quid cheaper for the same flights.

Tickets arer generally cheaper there (and generally extortionate in Japan) So if you're spending a bit of time on your travels it might be an option to buy on the go - a couple of good budget airlines working in SE Asia at the mo but I still haven't seen any going to Japan - anyone?

I just live in Japan and travel back through SE Asia a fair bit.
I found stop overs through Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok can be reasonable enough.
A couple of Chinese airlines are cheapish - China Airlines and Western China Airlines (I think). Singapore airlines, Cathay and Thai airlines are also worth checking out.

The best thing to do from here is to look on the budget flight websites such as cheapflights.co.uk (google cheap flights japan to get a list). Choose from Dublin or London to where ever you going in Japan (bear in mind Osaka, Fukuoka or other cities might be cheaper than Tokyo Narita. If you have a rail pass you can activate it when you arrive and take a bullet train to your destination). Once you find a cheap enough flight, fiddle around with the dates so that you have a stop off for a couple of weeks or whatever in Singapore, Bangkok or where ever. Once you arrive in S.E.Asia, go to a local travel agent and you'll be able to pick up cheap flights to other destinations in the region.

A bit general but the best thing is to do a lot of googling until you find something cheap enough. The earlier you book the better obviously. Good luck.
