"Dirty unionist bastard" Thats what I got called today while walking down the street in longford.I also called a "dirty prod" and to go back up the north because i was not wanted.

My crime:I was wearing an orange t-shirt.

    Two questions

1:Was it "insensitive"of me to wear orange today?(It was not a deliberate thing.Forgot it was the twelth)

2:Why is there so much scum in Longford town?I honestly never feel safe in longford town at night.Whereas Dublin seems a lot safer.Longford is small enough town but still has quite few murders/stabbings and supplies the north west with drugs?

Well they looked like the type of lads who dropped out of school before the junior cert.So doubt they could comprehend how wearing a plain orange tshirt is not the same as wearing a orange sash.

I think they wanted to beat the ****e out of me as they followed for quite a bit and had to duck into longrord cinema to lose them.Luckily I had a few friends with me.

No. Wearing the (rather rare) Rangers 02/03 third strip for the day would have been.

Well, you've learned a valuable lesson about wearing an orange shirt on the 12th July in Longford. Don't do it again.

1 - Were they wearing Celtic shirts?

2 - Would you say they supported England in the World Cup?

    No surprises there
    - did the Celtic jersey have OMAGH 98 on the back of it?

    - they may not support England but I'll bet they buy the newspaper that hypes up the England team more than anyone else - The Sun.

Hmmm orange lodges exist in Sth Africa, and in the lowland countries in Netherlands and Luxemburg, as well as in certain US counties.

We really dont have an issue with protestants celebrating their cultural history its just the aggressiveness of which it is celebrated by the Orange orders in NI.

    1. no it was not insensitive of you to wear that shirt. Anybody who picks up on that is a biggot and deserves to be ignored

    2. My mother is from Longford and we used go to my Granny's gaff in Killoe all the time, which was very quiet. The town was a different story. There were always gurriers hanging around the shopping centre, and they just looked like trouble. Furthermore, they were always hanging out of the flagpole of the courthouse.

    Reasons
1-No decent shops. Heatons is not the same as BT'S/ Cleary's/ Arnotts etc.
2-Until 1996 the Cinema had only one screen. If The Exorcist was playing, TS Kids wernt getting in
3-Deli Burger and Luigi's are not McDonalds, and they charge much higher prices which kids cant afford
4-St Micheals road etc breeds poverty/violence and ignorance
5-No concerts or shows are held in Longford. The July festival doent do enough
6-ST Mel's only has three GAA teams that means the rest have no other after school activity and tend to cause trouble
7-Loads of Families with links too organised crime. Dont pay tax, sell drugs, do drugs children are inbread. Inbread children tend to be more violent than normal ones
8-One shopping centre alows for anti social behaviour in Longford to be conglomerated. All the kids get together and think of ways to end the monotony
9-1997 Saw the first proper video shop in Longford. Until then the kids had to contend with RTE 1 and RTE 2
10-Starbucks, Cafe Moda, Insomnia, Cafe Java and The West Coast Coffee Company have not arrived in Longford, and until such time the kids and teenagers wil remain wired too the moon on Cadet and Family Value Cola and Red Lemonade
11.Nightclubs like Blazers attract all the riff raff from around the twon. You dont want to pull a bird in case her broter is from a gangland family and he'll bait you around the place. In Dublin Clubs like 92 and D2 wont let any old riff raff in, as such they cant cause as much trouble in Longford

-Above all its the boredom of the situation which charges the Longfordian youth. In August 1999 my family went into the town to get Luigi's at 7in the evening, the town was deserted. No amenities, no youth clubs, nothing, just space and boredom. AS MY lONGFORDIAN gRANDMOTHER USED SAY TO ME "the devil finds work for idle hands", and its the fact that Longford has created the conditions for idle hands, that so much anti social behaviour occurs. Longford has lived in the dark ages for a long time, and like its close neighbour Leitrim, it remains within them.

What needs to happen to Longford Town is a regeneration. It appeared to have begun when the new cinema was opened, but Longford's growth has been stunted since then.

The site of the old Annaly Hotel should be put to good use. A youth Club could be set up, or a new theatre could be built which is capable of showing concerts and pop acts which will draw the youths from the street and into the shows.

The Macdonalds which sits outside the town should be brought into it. This will allow the youths enjoy cheap food, and will attract them off the street

Governemnt money should be put into refurbishing buildings in longford town

The July Festival should be publicised more and it should become a tourist attraction

Longford Town FC Should move from Strokestown Road and to near the town

Brand new swimming pool should be built which is not as dingy as the current one

Town should be more open to Multi NATIONAL Corporations which will offer people very good jobs, and wont force them to commute to Dublin or leave Longford altogether

I love Longford with a passion as it gave me so many enjoyable summers, but it must break out of the dark ages if it wants to lose the threatening aptmosphere you speak about

It's very easy to just write such an event off to biggotry and think no matter about it. It's also entirely possible that the people involved believed the OP was deliberatly wearing an orange t-shirt to cause offense.

it still never ceases to amaze me how racism has flourished in Ireland, seeing that we were once among the most discriminated against people in the world! Signs like No Dogs, No Blacks, No Irish were common place years ago and now we've fought to get rid of them. and how do we reply, with people coming out with crap like "Dirty unionist bastard" . Well done lads. We've made our forefathers proud!*

Um, you do realise that none of us here actually said it... right?

I mean, I'm all for the righteous indignation, like everybody else, but essentially, you are preaching to the choir here.

Oh and <insert obligatory "what a bunch of scumbags" & "down with that sort of thing">

Ah... its comfy on this here bandwagon!

I'm not from Longford but I lived there for a few years.
Never thought anything too bad of it tbh, it's a grand town.

Yes, there are lots of scumbags about, but there aren't too many towns around where this isn't the case.

I generally went out on a Thur night (as I went home at the weekends), & never felt afraid / intimidated at all.

Yes, I had my wits about me a bit more at the weekend, but I really don't know if that was because of it being Longford, or just because it wasn't my home town.

I think this thread is being a bit hard on the town. Just my opinion

I don't see why everything has to be written off to racism. If somebody was walking around with a big plackard saying "fu*k you and fu*k your way of life, I spit on your ancestors who fought and died for your freedom", how would you expect people to react. It certainly wasn't the OPs intent to do so, but it's not exactly unknown for some unionist groups to try and antagonise republicans like that.

Same story in just about every single town and village in Ireland. Thank you Planning Authorities and Property Developer-Fianna Fáil pacts.

McDonalds is not something that should be encouraged.
Heatons being replaced by BT, Cleary's and Arnotts would just widen the divide between the well-heeled of Longford and the people who apparently need help.

I agree with your sentiment whole-heartedly. Kids and teens are bored to tears these days. They are being corrupted by consumerism and unabated marketing and lifestyling.

FFS, he just wore a plain Orange t-shirt. No matter what you say you cannot rationalise how those scumbags reacted.
Now if he was wearing an Orange t-shirt that said "fu*k you and fu*k your way of life, I spit on your ancestors who fought and died for your freedom" he should expect a kicking.

thats rubbish, the basic problem in this whole situation is that the little scumbags pressumed and then hated based on their pressumption, if like you say there was an other interpretation did they even open their mouths to ask? hell no their "well-informed" brains had it all worked out. and even if he was wearing an orange tshirt on the 12th on purpose does it give them the right to abuse him, are you advocating that 2 wrongs make a right?
Thats just the kind of attitude that meant i have to listen to this **** all my life cause i've an english sounding surname, i had a f'in teacher shout brits out at me in school once and play it off as a joke but i know the ****er was serious.

in all fairness, you are the jam man.

seriously though, mindless scumbaggery (i want credit for the invention of the word "scumbaggery).
i don't have anything orange, but i would wear something orange just to upset the scumbags. then i would use my big fat belly to squash them.

Im not sure where it comes from but balck Protestants (at least where I come from) are the ones who are very pious (how ironic:D) and normal Protestants are the ones who may have been more flexible with their beliefs, their unionism and may have had mixed marriages. For example my name, Dempster is a popular name where I live in Tyrone and the Black Dempsters were the most religious/ strict.

I dont think its an insult just an old fashioned description, people just use it in common speech. However calling someone a black Protestant Bastard may possibly have been an insult:D
