Does anyone know how to make a Black Forest?

We have this Irish pub here in Philly and they make this incredible Black Forest beer drink that I'm 99% sure is Guinness and Framboise. A friend came down from Boston and I introduced him to this drink and he loved it, so when he got back home, he went out and bought the two beers and is trying to make one on his own and is failing miserable.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

    Only girls mess with Guinness.

It's sacrilege here in Ireland to taint Guinness with anything.

Ask in the bar, no one drinks that type of ****e here, they'd be laughed out of the pub.

I remember a German insisted on buying me a Guiness and port one time, he couldn't believe that in over 5 years as a barman in Ireland that I had never heard of such a perversion. (I didn't drink it).

Ask in the pub that makes it.

Stick to this stuff http://www.mylifeisbeer.com/beer/bottles/bottledetail/152/ & stop messin' with our Guinness!

Alternatively, you could mince on over to here http://www.thatsthespirit.com/en/beer/beer_cocktails.asp & whip up an oul shandy for yourself. :D

Are you sure it wasn't a black and tan?
Half Guinness and half Smithwicks ale?
Did you assume it was coke?
I wouldn't have served Guinness and coke as a barman, the customer is not always right.

A black and tan is almost acceptable.

Yep some girls I knew once.
And a bloke, but I'm not so sure as he was wearing a pink t-shirt and carrying a handbag....

A black velvet always struck me as a good way to ruin two drinks in one go.

In my book, beer's not for mixing.

Ah I see now, well it may have been in lieu of real nutrition, a bit like Shane McGowan drinking Peach Schnapps for the sugar content to keep himself going.

Frank, you're a twit. It's me, Tommy. :D Yes, we all went to Plough on the night you couldn't make it. Sam G. is trying to make it with Framboise.

I do like a pint of proper Guinness from Irelend, but all we get is this watered down stuff which stinks.

OK, forgive my ignorance, but who is Shane McGowen? I heard his name in a Christy Moore song (love Christy's - Live at the Point CD)

Shane McGowan was the lead singer of The Pogues, then of The Popes, and now (I think) of The Pogues again. Also was married to Kirsty McColl.

He's known more for his spectacular drinking abilities, and his truly gruesome teeth, than his music (which is also quite good).

While to tell too many explicit tales of Shane would probably be against the charter, his life could pose as an example of what not to do, I think it's fair to say that no real food will have passed his lips in years, due to a very heavy drink and drug habit. He's been a heroin addict since he was a kid in London where he was also a rent boy for a while. He sings (of a sort) songs of heroes and republicans and all things romantic and Irish, and he has a mission in life to end like all Irish heroes, a victim of his own excess.

He's a character and a half, although you can see it's taking it's toll these days and his liver is suffering, but people have wondered here for years how he keeps going, but the answer is really the calories in alcohol.

Lead singer of the pogues, who were a great band in the olden days, kinda Irish trad punk.

So that's the Shane McGowan 101.

I listen to the Pogues from time to time, but never knew the lead singer was Shane. Very interesting. His drinking habits would make perfect sense then. Christy Moore did a cover of "Fairytale of New York" and mentions Shane at the very end. Very cool song (be sure its the one from Christy's Live at the Point album though)

I do prefer Flogging Molly though. Great upbeat music. :)

Sweet Mother of Pearl!!!! I just Googled Shane McGowan and he is one seriously ragged looking guy.

I reckon anyone who's been doing what he's been doing for as long as he has is very lucky to be alive, he's looked ragged since he's been on the scene in Ireland. I remember a friend describing him drinking from a bottle of brandy at a saoimse cois laoi years ago, he threw up behind a speaker, continued to sing and drink for the rest of the gig. Rock and rolllllllllllll :p
