Just imagine a friend of a friend owned a nice 1976 car in the north, and he was prepared to lend it to a friend from the south for , let's say a week.
I'm assuming the southern friend could drive the car if he had the driving of other cars not owned by him etc................., and if it was taxed, but not insured by northern friend. any thoughts on how our friends in blue would view this?

If you read the small print on your insurance policy you may find that the other car has to be insured by someone else for you to be covered by your insurance. There might also be restrictions on you policy as regards your age, the age and engine capacity of the other car and indeed the fact that the other car is a vintage car. Don't automatically assume that the fact that you have an insurance policy in your name that it gives you the right to drive any other car. If your not upfront with your insurance company they will walk away when the sh*t hits the fan, believe me, I've seen the likes of this before. One example, if you crash your car and your car has Bald tyres your insurance company can refuse to honour your claim on the grounds that you didn't upkeep your car so its effectively breach of contract between you and the insurance company. Don't ever think you can pull a fast one on an insurance company, they will get you in the end. Simply insure the car, its cheap enough ffs. I don't think you'll get much or any grief from the guards or the customs as regards road tax and VRT tbh.

The insurance is fine, no restrictions. Unfortunately i'm also of a certain age where there are very few engine/age/insurance group restrictions. I was more concerned about the vrt and customs siezing the car thing.

'Spose your mate were to insure it and have you as a named driver?

I've no problem doing a temporary sub on the insurance, it's just a question of what plod thinks of the lending arrangement.

I insured my everyday car with AXA last month after one-direct took away driving of other car option and I asked what was the criteria for the 'other' car. I was told it must be Irish reg'd taxed and NCT'd if under 30 years old, and another thing which surprised me was driving of other cars doesn't include spouse/partners car, you have to be named on their policy

    Vehicle Registration Tax

Foreign Registered Vehicles Temporary Exemptions - VRT 2

    1. Introduction

This leaflet outlines the circumstances in which a foreign registered motor vehicle may be brought into the Republic of Ireland (the State) on a temporary basis.

The circumstances in which a foreign registered vehicle may be brought into the State vary depending on whether the vehicle is intended for private or commercial use.

    PRIVATE USE

    2. What Conditions Apply

Any imported vehicle which is owned by or registered in the name of a non-resident person is not required to be registered in Ireland subject to the following conditions :

The vehicle must have been acquired with all the appropriate taxes paid and these must not have been exempted or refunded in any way. The standard registration plates in use in the domestic market of a country are normally accepted as evidence of this.
The vehicle may not in any circumstances be driven by a State resident.
The vehicle may not be disposed of or hired out in the State or lent to a State resident.
The period of time that the vehicle is in the State does not exceed 12 months.
The 12 months time limit will not apply where a person is on a task of definite duration in the State.
