Does anyone use one of these printers?

I've had one years but very very rarely use it, anyway it ran out of ink last week for the first time since I don't know when, colour went followed shortly by black.

So went to tescos, bought new cartridges, installed, black works fine, colour doesn't. Some colours are missing, basically I just have blue and nothing else.

Now the thing is the blank ink was a Canon cartridge while the colour ink is a Tesco cartridge - these were the only ones I saw on sale. And they're slightly different, in both cases theres a plastic clip over the bottom that you remove, simple enough, but the tesco cartridge also has a clip over the top, and the instructions just say 'remove the clip' so I don't know if it means both or just the bottom one. However, it failed to work with it on, so I removed it, and it didn't come without a fight and actually left part of it plugging holes in the top of the cartridge. Eventually I got them out but it didn't seem to make any difference.

So, I decide it's a dodgy cartridge and return it, but what do you know I'm getting the same problem with the replacement! So I want to make sure I'm doing it right if anyone knows the cartridge I'm talking about before I go ripping the top off again(it's refusing to come off without a fight again)

I've also tried doing a deep clean in the printer properties menu, which improved matters but only slightly...
