i use a dreambox 7000s and its an excellent reciever.but they require a bit of effort to get the grips of it.there is a new model dreambox dm8000 that supports HD coming out soon ? ,but could cost about 800 euro  .check out these german sites for buying a dreambox http://www.digi-sat-online.de/index.php?cPath=49_53 and http://www.hm-sat-shop.de/receiver-digital-dreambox/ .uk online stores are a ripoff compared to german sellers imo.

I wonder is there much point in investing right now in a dreambox till the HD versions hit the market?

Whats the difference between a dreambox and a digibox or another FTA system?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

For Sky pay TV a Sky Digibox is the only reliable solution.

Most FTA receivers have more features than a basic Sky Digibox, but without Sky Interactive Text or Sky Program Guide.

A Dream box has a somewhat tarnished reputation as its open archtecture makes it easier for hackers, pay tv pirates and illegal card sharing. Some have a hard disk so can record programs. All can connect to PC via Ethernet.

There are many legitmate users of Dreamboxs and also many similar and better spec receivers, Topfield, Kathrein, ReelMultimedia etc. Like Tivos, Dreambox owners tend to be enthusiastic evangelists for their machine. Other Satellite TV viewers can't see what the fuss is about :)

There are a great variety of receivers for Non-Sky PayTV. A Sky Digibox only works for Sky Pay TV or some FTA TV. Most non-Sky receivers like the Dreambox will work on ANY Pay TV sytem with a legitimate CAM and viewing card. It is possible for "advanced" Satellite / computer hobbyists to use a legitimate Sky card in a Dream box to record and Watch the Sky Pay TV you subscribed to, but there is nothing definate that it would still work tomorrow and "out of the box" it does not do it. "Advanced assembly required:)"

I've a Triple Dragon which is similar to a Dreambox (both linux-based receivers with same cpu).

I added a harddisk drive to use it as a multimedia box i.e. music, photos, video recorder, file serving/backup, etc...
My setup is a Triax 88cm dish with Moteck motor.

Overall, with any of these linux-based receivers you can do a lot more (both legal and illegal) than a typical non-linux-based receiver - it's similar in functionality to a linux-PC with moderate MIPS. This generally requires a bit more know-how / tech-savvy. It can also lead to stability issues due to the changing receiver software.
That said, using the box as supplied, this know-how is not required and the system is very stable.
But then, there may not be much point in buying a linux-based receiver if you're not going to play with it.

I'd agree with mayto on cheaper prices from Germany compared to UK or Ireland.

You can use Kelkoo or Froogle or any other price comparison service to find the best price.
