Earlier today, I just had a flashback to when I was ickle, and I used to grab my giant bucket of lego, and head for the jungle at the back of the garden to build myself a city. I used to love just sitting there pretending to run an empire, and its amazing how involved you actually got with these games!! To be honest, even though I'm now 29, I would probably still enjoy doing this if it werent for the fact that you'd probably get locked up in a mental institution. Instead I just play the PS2 (and build virtual empires :D )

What do you miss most about being ickle?

Having no bills to pay like the others have said, everything seemed so easier. Playing football all day in the summer months and not having to get up. :)

Oh yeah - the summer holidays were brilliant. We'd head off to the 'back field' which was a building site and get jaunts in the JCBs from the builders. We'd 'help' the bin men and then get a spin on the back of the truck - the smell didn't bother us. We'd arrive home filthy for dinner and afterwards we'd play football on the green til dark. No bills and no worries..............

Feeling rich when all you had was a pound note in your pocket

Getting up to watch saturday morning TV (which is utter crap now even if you are a kid from what I've seen)

Getting off school for the summer holidays.

    Christmas morning.

Water fights and general mischief...rarely happens if ever as an adult in day to day life.

How days seemed to last a life time.
The smell of mothers apple pie cooling on the window sill.
Running through the fields chasing butterflies.
How every day was an adventure.
How the neighbourhood seemed to be extent of your world and anything beyind it was dangerous and unknown.

How great it was not to write gay posts.

Way to spoil the mood Kernel!

Everything mentioned, and playing tennis on the street every time wimbledon came round, and setting up our own world cup when it was on and playing out the matches after watching them...

This thread makes me sad also :(

Being so accepting, meeting some new kid who lives 'round the corner and just like that you're best friends... where in adult life it seems to take years of knowing someone and even then you have to make them fill out the forms.
And that's if you even like them... after all, you've had years to think about all the traits you dislike in people... and they've had years to become very fúcked up individuals themselves... the friend checklist seems to grow in complexity year on year.

All the other stuff aswell that you can't do as an adult... like go out and cycle your bike around the neighbourhood in your underpants swinging a tennis racket around... you'd be locked up.
I dunno, maybe if I'm drunk one night I'll give it a go. :D

Though having said that... there were a lot of really shítty things about being a kid aswell... having to beg your parents to buy you things you wanted.
Being an adult and having your own money... especially if you've got a good disposable income can absolutely rawkx0rz.

Oh and camping in the back garden.

Ah ok then, I miss playing football and running about for 5 hours solid and still feeling fine the next day. And summer holidays that seemed to last forever while you hang around with your mates. Oh, and I miss the Amiga.

    There, nostalgia! :)

Definitely the summer holidays. Just going out on the nice sunny days, calling over to your friends and finding fun stuff to do all day.

    Bliss!

    The cartoons were the best!
    Transformers, Thundercats, Mask, etc

Your first kiss, just the sheer innocence and thrill of it even though it was only a peck.

Summer holidays, camping in my garden, lego, water fights.
Oh, we had loads of teddies and conrolled tem in wars. I of course controlled King Baba. :D

I loved 'The Dark Game' where we just beat the crap out of each other at night with no lights on in our house, the shark game where somebody was a shark and the others had to stay off the floor when s/he wasn't looking and they had some goal to accomplish. Another game where you picked a method of death, and acted out how you would die. Wrestling on a matres in the back garden.
    Having limitless energy.

Meeting somebody and being best friends in like five seconds.
Girls getting their friend to tell you she liked you, haha, and also not having to worry about mind games. Making our tennis courts and golf courses in the back garden. The little presents my sister used to always make me, which would invariably include a bouncy ball and a foreign coin.
Bah, i could go on all day. :)

EDIT: Forgot tree houses, they were the best fun ever.

Tree huts and secret bolt-holes! Getting the bikes out and cycling out to somewhere, anywhere on a summers day.

    Mike.

    The energy.

What do you miss most about being ickle?

Deliciously permanent irresponsibility followed by pocket money and The Beano at the end of every week irrespective of the state of the economy.

Also, when you are a kid the concept of inability to pay on the part of adults just never arises. If it did you simply refused to climb up any more chimneys to sweep them.

And finally, my invisible friend with whom I spent years drilling for oil at the bottom of the garden

... cutting turf on those roasting hot days of summer 1995 :p ...
... exploring caves and underground rivers, with nothing but a few £1.50 torches to light the way ...
... racing after silage tractors and jumping up on to the back of the trailers, and see who could hang on the longest ...
    ... Hallow's eve ...
... being sent to bed at 9 o'clock at night ...
... camping out under the stars on a warms summers night, next to a very menacing looking castle, of which many a ghost and ghoulish story was told ...
    ... secondhand BMX' s ...
... milking the cows with the grandad, and learning to drive a tractor at age of eight :D ...
    ... getting kicked by granda's cows ...

ah those were the days, seems so far removed from now though,

Lying down in a field looking up at the clouds & trying to see things in them
Making swings out of any tree you could find
Saying you were going to run away & packing a suitcase you can't even lift full of everything you can't find
Dressing up in your parents clothes
    Water fights
    Going to the kiddie disco
Going to the seaside for the day (never seem to get time these days)
Birthday parties where you ate til you were sick

... cutting turf on those roasting hot days of summer 1995 :p ...

That was the best summer! Every year people always say this summer could be another 1995.

As I'm 18 I still have some of the benefits like not caring about debts and bills and things but unfortunately now I have to start thinking about my future :(

I miss primary school though. It was so much fun, we used to play games in class and in the summer we used to stay outside from half twelve onwards watching the boys playing football.
I miss lying in the sun reading famous five books all day long!
And everyone surely misses santa! I still love Christmas morning though because my mom still makes a fuss :D !

Walking around the house while looking in a mirror held in your hands to make it feel like you were walking on the ceiling. ie, walking around light fittings and stepping over door frames.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,863 ✭✭✭✭crosstownk

Playing rounders on the road - and hopscotch.
Building forts out of grass cuttings when the field was cut once a year.
Stockpiling wood from September onwards for the bonfire
Cycling up to the hellfire club on a Raleigh Chopper.

Cool thread, btw - so nostalgic!

I don't miss being a kid because everybody close to me wether they realised it or not in their own little way bullied me and I don't know to this day why. I don't miss it and I'm glad I don't.

Not having a care in the world.. not having to think about the future or anything.

    Definitly this ^

I miss the long summers. Leaving the house at 9.30am and not coming back till your mam called you in for dinner. You seemed to have all these great plans all summer about building forts and tree houses, I miss this being my greatest worry.... how am I going to get more nails and wood?
