Decorative render, quoins, etc

I'm considering a pebble dash render (light greyish pebble coloration)
as the external render for our 2 storey house build. The alternative
approved by planning is nap plaster which probably requires more
maintenance in the short run. I've liked the look of the dash
on some other 2 storey country houses I've seen and I think it
fits in with the general look, etc.

Anyway ... I realise that a grey dash would looks severe/austere
unless the plaster reveals or borders around the windows, cill &
lintels are fairly well defined and give a visual separation from the
darker dash finish on the main portion of the house.
I've also been thinking along the lines of getting the outside
plasterers to put quoin effect (the usual staggered edge brick
design) at the front corners of the house. I happened to mention
this to the builder the other day and he said that quoins tend
to add a good deal of expense to the plastering job. He mentioned
something like 1000 Euro per set. By set might he mean a single
row running the height of the house ? If so I could cut costs by
putting them on just either side on the front of the house and
    leave out the back.

Does anyone have an idea of the going cost for supply and
placement of quoins as part of the exterior plasterwork ?

I can't remember how much the Quions were on our house, but I think it was around a grand + VAT for 5 corners (L shaped single storey house). That's for plaster quions.

We have dash as well (90-10 white/brown mix) and the quions really do finish it off nicely (as someone who wasn't convinced when she who must be obeyed decided).

    Ipl,

A good friend used window bands and quions on a rough dashed house that he renovated. The bands and quions had a sandsone type finish and were made from mesh reinforced EPS (expanded polystyrene foam). We work with EPS but didn't supply them. A tight budget was one of the reasons he used them but they look very well, even after 5 years.

I think that he got them from a merchant in Dublin. Being lightweight and easily handled they could be cheaper than the traditional types. Just a suggestion !!

They look pretty cool, and easily installed for a diy'er. Just wonder how tough the quions are, especially as the corners of a house are easily knocked and banged?

    Cmar,
the ones l have seen fitted have a fibreglass mesh embedded in the base render. The use of a base coat and mesh give the EPS a strong, tough finish we use a this system for certain projects.

Pretend plastered quoins on the corners of houses look absolutely diabolical. Don't do it.

Which variety of quoins (say on a nap plaster finish house or pebble
dashed house) are the real mccoys ??
Are they plastered quoins , stone quoins ?

My assumption was plastered quoins and the last few posts have
been about some kind of synthetic after market varieties.
