I have one of thoise on board intel High Definition ones, and it's pretty damn good, definately better than a medium range creative. although I think far inferior to a high end creative.

I've a Creative Audigy 2zs. Very good card. Great for gaming movies etc. gonna put X-fi in my new rig.

Would there be much of a difference between using onboard standard audio and say an Audigy 2, even when using the same non branded speakers? I have a standard DELL 5.1 setup, its actually fine as is for watching movies and gaming, but I wouldn't mind chancing my arm to see what Creative can offer me, but wouldn't be hugely bothered if it meant I had to buy new speakers and all :)

havok: i have a lidl jobbie 7.1 surround sound and had it hooked up with my onboard 7.1...the sound was ok....it was grand and i didnt see anything wrong with it, but then i got my new htpc rig and connected them up to an Audigy.....and OH MY GOD!! did i notice the difference!!!

got me thinking ...what if i were to splash out on decent speakers......

Havok: I upgraded to an Audigy 2 zs from my crappy realtek onboard sound, and the improvement is very noticeable. I find performance in games has improved too. I guess the onboard sound was doing lots of stuff in software that the audigy does in hardware.

Then again I got 600W Technics seperates. 5yrs old but stil like new. Tape decks never even used.

My advise: if ya got good 5.1 system get good soundcard. if ya only got crappy speakers, stay on onboard sound.

Creative have great features . ya can add great effects to music etc & can send stereo sound out on all speakers. Well worth the money IMO.
