Question about motherboard compatability...(ABIT NI8-SLI GR)

I'm getting a new motherboard and processor which I intend overclocking.

an ABIT NI8-SLI GR and an Intel Pentium D 2.66(533mhz) chip.

The motherboard says that it supports Pentium Ds with 1066 and 800mhz FSB. But the 2.66 I'm getting is only 533.

_BUT_ I intend on overclocking the Pentium to 4.1GHz, 800MHz fsb (thanks to Tom's Hardware ), so might it work? Or will the motherboard detect it as having too low of a FSB when I first turn it on, and not boot at all... ?

The motherboard should be arriving tomorrow, but the CPU won't be here until mid next week probably. Should I RMA the motherboard the minute I get it or wait until next week to try out the processor in it? If it doesn't work I'll then have to wait an extra week to have my system back up and running... what should I do?

You do know that there is a decent possibility that you wont be able to overclock that far?

ah, THG, sensationalism at its best.

The board and chip will be fine at stock.

Do you know what stepping the chip is. TBH if you get 3.2Ghz you would be doing well.

Indeed, you could end up with a 'dud'.
You've got no come back in that case, don't just ramp it up to 4.1Ghz expecting it to be stable.

Take a look at this compatibility chart, to ease your fears.

This is a very inappropriate thing to say, but bear with me...

    /begin
Whenever I see or hear the word "motherboard" I always think of a girl I used to work with in Microsoft who was sexually attracted to men masturbating onto motherboards (seriously.) She used to tell me about her fantasies which involved putting circuit boards inside her...

Mental or what? She has destroyed that word for me!
    end/

I thought you might find that interesting... sorry to hijack!!

Ah alright, the board and cpu should be ok?

Lads, I'm not a complete n00b. I've done this before. I've been investigating, and according to Tom's Hardware, it can be done, and it rivals an AMD FX-60 ;)

I shoulda included Tom's link in the original post

Very interesting stuff. The bencmarks are amazing.

But I'll need to buy some watering cooling, but I wanna see how high I can get it with a Zalman cooler that I have. Probably around 3.3-3.4ghz

I wasnt refuting it could be done (I have a 1.8 running @ 2.86 on air), just saying dont get your hopes up. Some of the 2.6's are good OC'ers, most however aren't.

Post up how you get on here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054929545

    Will do.

My last CPU was a P4 2.6 Northwood. I ran it at 3.3 all the time. I got a goody that time, hope I get another one this time :D

No offence mate. But if your still looking at toms for Overclocking youve a long way to go.
I wouldnt be jumping into the world of OCing without a lotta research.
Read around the net until u have a very good idea of how things work. Cause otherwise you run the risk of frying your gear.
Its just for our own saftey
And No it wont quite rival an Fx-60. Its a good chip at high speeds. But not quite that good!

I never said I hold Tom's Hardware on any sort of pedestal. I just stumbled accross it(on another forum), of course I've gone and googled it and checked up what people have said about it on forums. I didn't buy the PREMIUM UBER ASUS MOTHERBOARD Tom whole heartedly reccommended, just like the Zalman cooler(He'd say one of the best coolers available on the market today!!!!!!). So I learnt from past experience. I had an Abit Is7, and a Zalman CNPS7000, and it overclocked my P4 2.6GHz perfectly. Got to 3.3 stable, but to keep some longegivity, I left it at 3.1.

Unless you majorly increaced the Vcore, I wouldnt worry about longevity. Without a voltage increase, 4years is a reasonable expectation providing the cooling is adequate of course.

That 2.6 chip is why I picked up overclocking as opposed to buying high end chips. I found such a performance increse at the higher speeds.

the Abit NI8-SLI GR just arrived 10 minutes ago. I didn't get the heatpipe that was supposed to come with it... wtf?? It came with a nifty looking cooler though. But still, now there's an empty space on the top left corner

[edit] Shag it, my zalman cooler won't fit, either
