The SB Post reperted the week before last that the arrivals area of the terminal will open for business at the end of July, while the departures area won't open until the Autumn.

    I kid you not.

I presume the aircraft will taxi to a remote stand or at least a non-airbridge stand during this period to allow for passenger movements from different areas.

Thought that myself alright, there seems to be only four/five airbridges

    Subsequently have also found this
The terminal is now expected to open to arrivals (only) on 10 July 2006, to charters (inbound & outbound) on 17 July 2006 and to all traffic on 24 July 2006. Due to the high level of charter traffic in July, this reduced level of traffic will provide a training experience for airport staff, whilst alleviating congestion, albeit for only a week, in the existing terminal.

    Also from Monday's news
New Cork Airport terminal to open within three weeks
    03/07/2006 - 15:20:22

Cork Airport’s new terminal will be opened within two or three weeks, it was confirmed today.

Ryanair is considering beefing up its presence at Cork Airport, leading to the possibility of creating new flights in and out of the facility.

Some sources said that up to 10 new pilots and 14 new cabin crew could be employed to work specifically out of Cork, but Ryanair declined to comment.

Meanwhile, speaking at a meeting of the South Western Regional Authority (SWRA) airport consultative committee, airport chief executive Pat Keohane said he expected the terminal to be handed over by builders Rohcon later this week.

“The transfer will take place in a matter of days,” he said. “The expectation will be that we will have it open in two or three weeks,” he said.

The terminal will first be used for arrivals, then for the departures of selective charter flights, and then for all flight arrivals and departures.

It also emerged at today’s meeting that an independent report into the division of Cork’s €200m debt will be with Transport Minister Martin Cullen this week.

Junior Minister Batt O’Keeffe says the BDO Simpson Xavier report should be with the minister on Wednesday. He also said that Minister Cullen will be in Cork next Monday and may be able to meet key figures to discuss the airport issue.

However, opposition politicians lashed out at Government TDs on the issue and insisted that a promise to keep Cork debt-free must be kept.

Well it can cater for 3 million and current passenger numbers is below that but only just.

When it will be finished it should be class although it should be for the price tag.

Seemingly too ryanair are to announce shortly new flights from cork too.

On a side note I had the dis pleasure of taking off and landing in dublin airport recently and omg what a kip, by far the worst airport ive ever been to. queues and rip offs everywhere.

The new terminal wont be open tell say 2010 if your lucky.

Again another winner for cork county council for planning ahead.

Since most flights will be of the ryanair type with a required fast turn around these airbridges arent needed for most flights anyway

Remember shannon holds Cork back regarding trans atlantic flights

Yes but Dublin Airport is far busier then Corks and faces much larger challenges. The new terminal will be far far bigger then what was built in Cork. At least Cork has a modern terminal now anyway.

i dont see why cork airport dont allow ryanair to use the "old" (ie. current) terminal for their flights. it would certainly help with congestion in the newer termainl when it gets to that stage.

are they going to leave the old terminal as it is or remove it altogether?

Becasue then the old terminal has to be policed, staffed, kept secure.

It's a non issue anyhow, the new terminal will be grand.

I think someone mentioned that using the old terminal would require new PP and EIS, both of which assumed the old one shut down when new one fully operational. That said it was just a board posting, I haven't seen either document.

I think they are going to see how the new terminal goes and as I mentioned Ryanair are keeping a close eye on things. It has been mentioned in the past that they may like to use the old termianl for their flights.

Just have to wait and see.

Is Shannon still bigger as they both are catered for design capacity of 5million.? It would be great if someone could post the square metres of the terminal or both?

Jank says it's designed for 3 million, which is you is right?? That's a big difference.

Its designed for 3 million or so it says but there are projections for 5 million, so maybe the terminal will be the same.

I was reading the project display for this in the old Cork Terminal about 6 weeks ago. Apparently, when the project was announced in 2003, Cork had something like 1.8m p.p.a. The new terminal is being built to cater for 3m passengers but is designed to be 'extendable' to 5m. I am not sure what that means exactly, but I assume that for a relatively small level of capital investment the airport can be increased in capacity.

However, as the traffic figures are already 'at or about' 3m passengers, the new terminal will be stretched from day one. If Ryanair announce new routes, you can be sure it will exceed 3m passengers in the next 12 months.

BTW the old terminal is being converted to offices, and will be linked to the new terminal by catwalk.

The new terminal looks very impressive, and is a major step forward for Cork, regardless of capacity (put plainly, the existing airport was built decades ago, probably for under 1m passengers, so anything will be a relief.).

I still want to know where all the fish in the old terminal went. Granted, some of them died from idiots dropping copper coins into them, but what about all the tanks?

Cork Airport was good till they got rid of the fish. Then it just got boring.

The airport looks like Oslo Airport. The walkways, airbridges, even the baggage hall looks the same. The terminal bulding is the same shape even the same design as Oslo phase 1. They must have either nicked the plans or used the same desinger. Although the cork airport is on a small scale.

An article in todays Indo says that the new terminal will open on a phased basis from Aug 1

    linky

There is still alot of uncertantiy about the old terminal. Some of the old offices are to be kept there but most of the building will be left vacent.

It would be of no surprise that ryanair may step in to take it over as a "competing terminal" They only offer 3 destinations which is nothing especially when they announced that cork is one of their bases.

When the new terminal opens id expect the number of ryanair flight to increase 5 fold within 18 months

    Nice building. Two questions though:

1.) Have they figured out who's paying for it yet?

    2.) Where is Jack Charlton?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 8,632 ✭✭✭darkman2

Dublin Airport will pay for it of course. What im wondering is what made Cork airport more needy of a new terminal over Dublin!? Its one cock up after another.

i dont think dublin will pay for it...arent they seperate compnaies now?

By building the terminal Cork airport was living beyond its means. The DAA will take the debt.

NO the DAA built the airport and ran up the debt so blaiming Cork for it is a bit rich indeed. Also the government has to take some blame after its broken promises.
