If you do a search on this forum for New York Hotels or New York accomodation you'll find loads of threads with recommendations from hostels to 5* places.

Don't think many places will be cheap-ish in December! Stayed in Comfort Inn, Manhattan (w 42nd St.) in January and it was cheap and very very central. We walked everywhere. Booked it through Choice Hotels and had no problems....

    Good luck!

I stayed in the Wolcott Hotel (and booked through their own website www.wolcott.com) which was the cheapest half-decent place I could find when I went to NY back in April. Its not the fanciest hotel in the world but its in a good location - around the corner from the Empire State and 5 mins walk to Macys & 34th Street subway stop.
