    Hi folks,

99% certain this will happen but stay tuned in for further updates.

There'll be a whole bunch of people meeting for an MMA session in my gym in Glasnevin on Friday 21st of July.
So far Mark Leonard, myself and my group and a few others are confirmed. Should be a bit of craic and all are welcome.

By the way, just to be clear, this isn't a cross training session, this is an MMA session. (just in case ot got confused with some of the sessions that went on before)

Is it just sparring and rolling? or is there some tuition? cost? time? :D

Friday evening I presume? I'd love a chance to roll with mr grappletastic

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 278 ✭✭Miles Long

That sound Fantana! I'd love to go. I have the same Q's as Valmont. (thanks V)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,398 ✭✭✭columok

Would be very interested. Could do with a Galway beatdown (aka Mark kicking the crap out of me!)

Haven't trained since Easter so this should be fun.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 314 ✭✭Mola.mola

Yay! Colum's back. Valmont I'm 99% sure there will be no tuition costs. And I'll also go out on a limb to say, if you ask a question you'll get a helpful answer but I'd doubt there will be formal teaching. If you're new you'll learn loads.

    About tuition:
I believe Mark is going to give a run through of what people should expect for the MMA league for the benefit of a few of my lads and a few others from other clubs so if you're thinking of entering that at any stage, this could be invaluable! It won't be too formal a session apart from that.
I have a few lads who are very new to the game who'll be there so there will be other beginners and if you ask a question you'll get an answer!

    About time:
Evening, exact time to be confirmed.

    About cost:
    Free!

It's a cliched question but I'm a new new new new new person to mma. I'm aware deep end is the best end to start, but will I be a little lost and hence slow the pace? Is there a plan/idea/deal that's going on for the evening?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Usually we just beat down any new new new new people to MMA.... now if you were new new new new new new, you would have got an ice cream...

Seriously, no plan, no pace, if you're coming just let whoever you're working with know you're new and they'll be cool I'm sure.

:D But I'm scared... no, I just have little or no idea how these things work. I'm pretty fit, the crippling childhood asthma is nearly gone (how's the pollen count in your hall?) so I should keep up. That and I've no shame, ego or inhibitions about going in and getting twisted and bend or kicked and clinched or whatever. Should be a blast. Another silly question, What is the formal attire of the evening, will I bring sparring gear?

What is the formal attire of the evening
I'd imagine that nobody will be left train without a shiny Vitamins & Minerals rashguard, and a tight fitting pair of TapouT shorts! ;)

or else you could just wear whatever you want. Mark L will probably be wearing a dodgy training vest so anything would be an improvement on that! :)

Bicycle shorts and snorkeling gear?:D Thanks for the heads up man. How does the sparring/rolling/clinching(?) gear thing work? I can't imagine it's easy to put someone in a lock with boxing gloves on?

Everytime I think about retiring that vest, someone makes a wisecrack that makes me give it one last run out!

My plan is just to roll with everybody and get to know some new MMA guys that I might have not had a chance to meet before. Other than that I am pretty sure everyone who comes along will learn something as the levels attending will vary right across the spectrum. If anyone wants to ask anything about the league then there will be time for that too.

Now i have to go, I'll get to talk to ML INPERSON about the MMA League.

    Miles, ok, my advice,

What to wear = Shorts (football shorts will do, board shorts are better, most importantly, shorts that look like they won't rip when grabbed are best), T-shirt (see above, something that won't rip, a rash guard is like a tight vest that is quite tough, you can get one in elverys/lifestyle for 35 euro, but a regular t will be fine, don't wear your fancy ones though!), no footwear.

Protective Gear = For the MMA League, the starting out rung of MMA in Ireland you need to wear shin guards (not football ones but soft ones) a mouthguard (gum shield) and MMA gloves. The Martial Arts shop of capel street sell all of the above. However, none of the above is nessecary for a training session because usually in a MMA class you start out with Clinch (wrestling) and ground stuff (bjj, submissions etc). Head gear is rare but some people wear it.

What else = A bottle of water, regardlesss of how fit you are you'll need it. Short finger nails and toenails. A hair band if you've got really long hair.

How to get there? = http://www.ko-martialarts.com/gettinghere.htm

    Bumpity bump...

There will be light refreshments available at a public house close to the venue afterwards for anyone who's interested....

Ha! I just saw this now! First time I met Mark he was wearing "the vest"!! I for one am happy to see it still in action. Reminds me of my first forays into the wicked world of MMA... why isn't there a "misty eyed nostalgia" emoticon?

I have a pair of Bad Boy lycra shorts that a company sent me as a "replacement" for a pair of shorts I ordered. Thanks a bunch, now I gotta roll with Bad Boy written on my ass! They get used as "under gi"!

    Miles,
The dress code of the evening will be "sports casual". Wear what you're comfortable in. Cup and gumshield should be fine but if you have shin pads and boxing gloves, so much the better.

Mark O'Toole always rolls wearing a beanie cap coming up to fights, must let him know!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

I wear one training in winter on account of my "thinning" hair.*

So who's coming to this then?

*not "thin" yet, still "thinning". Give it a couple of months though...

I'm coming for sure, just have to secure accomodation and everything is ready to go. Going to ask Mark O'Toole if he is still up for it too when I see him at training.

Try camping in westmeath - thats tough ! - ok off topic a bit.

I'll be there obviously - AND I wanna see some of these AIMAA ground skilz !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭kerinsp

Loz I am starting to look like a tinker with all this rolling. So far I've chipped a piece off my front tooth, looks like a scar developing on my nose and my ear is showing signs of cauliflowering.
I still rock the party that rocks the party though.

I'll be there on the mma night. I'll have a red face to match my red top.

Loz, my man (grinn), erm... *pushes Roper out in front of himself, mimicing his voice "I'll show you skilz" and runs off into the night...* I'll attempt to hold my own, but i is in no way a realistic reflection of AIMMA ground skills!!!!:D

ROFL @ Paul - your have to start wearing your darthvader headgear for rolling ...

Saving my new extra shiney Bright Orange Nike Rashguard for that night.

So this is two days away and I'd like to get an idea of how many hors d'ouevres to get the caterers to put on. Who's coming then?

If you don't know where it is, refer to the map on one of the pages here. I think its page 2.

I make my triumphant return to KO martial arts this friday...

The plan is to head along to this Kokoro session tomorrow and then head along on friday too.

But... have a load of work to get done for friday so the thursday session may or may not be axed by me.
