Hey folks, recently i installed a dvd writer in my computer. All was going well until i downloaded burnatonce and cd burner xp pro. I burned one cd with burnatonce(which turned out fine) and didn't use cd burner xp.

Now however my computer takes ten minutes to start up, none of my drives turn up in "my computer"(two hdd's, 2 cd's and a floppy) and the computer is just generally slow.

I tried to run msconfig but the run menu won't open. Also when i open add/remove programs nothing comes up, the cursor just turns into an hourglass when i have it over the open window(same happens in my computer).

I have uninstalled the two burning programs but the problem is persisting.
Maybe it has nothing to do with the drive or the programs but just thought i'd give you the background.

Firefox and windows media player work fine.

Any ideas? Waiting 10 mins for startup is really annoying me!
    Thanks!

Did you set the master/slave setting correctly for the DVD writer if it shares the cable with another device ?

Do you have an NVIDIA or VIA based chipset with either of their IDE drivers installed as they are known to cause issues with some optical drives ?

What sort of AV package have you got installed AVG or Avast etc. try a scan with either of those.

Install Windows Defender and do a full system with it, likewise use Spybot and Ad-aware and do full scans with those as well to root anything out- be sure to update the definitions to the latest with each program.

Also Hijack This will reveal what is loading at startup and allow you to kill something loading at boot.

The dvd drive is set to master and the other cd drive is set to slave.

My motherboard is a gigabyte GA-8SIMLH, as far as i know it has an SiS chipset

Ran scans with AVG, Ad-aware and spybot and nothing!

If i double click on my computer and leave it for about an hour the icons show up! Something is slowing down the whole process.

I ran hijack this too but i didnt understand any of the output!

Copy and paste Hijack this output into this and it will parse it for you. Very helpful.

Used the above link and it found no serious errors, i really have no idea what the problem is.

    Anybody else have any input?

    Thanks for all replies

Can you do a system restore to just before you installed Drive/software?

What happens if you unplug the CD-RW drive and just leave the DVD-RW drive on it's own ?

Strip the system back to the HDD with your OS
If it boots up ok then add the other drives one by one till the problem reoccurs

If it is still slow with only the HDD with the OS on it try this

If you have a spare HDD do a fresh install on it with your others HDDs disconnected see if everything runs fine on a fresh install.

are automatic updates enabled? If they are then odds are that you've received a buggy patch from MS that doesnt match some of your other drivers. Seen it happen many times, only way out is to do a system restore... or use add/remove programs and remove the latest set of updates.

Try booting into safemode to access the control panel.

    Hi

From your description it sounds like one particular process is grabbing the cpu.

Have you tried running task manager (ctrl alt delete once to access ) and seeing if a particular process is grabbing the cpu? If it is "end task" it. If you manage to get your system stable run systems scans for virus and adware/spyware and see if you manage to get rid of it. If that dont work try deleting any run entries in the registry that have that name. If the process name you find relates to another installed program you could always try uninstalling the program.

    good luck!!!

I unplugged the hd that doesnt hold windows and the two cd drives and it was fine. Then i booted it adding one at a time and hey presto, everything is back to normal. How queer!
