Festival Photographer Wanted

This August bank holiday weekend a festival is taking place in Merrion Square, Dublin called the Street Performance World Championship. It involves bringing some of the best street entertainers in the world to Dublin to compete for the title of the Street Performance World Champion.

A video of the performers that have been invited can be seen at www.spwc.ie

A promo gig for the festival is going to involve bringing 10 of the performers around the city (Grafton St., IFSC, Civic Offices Amphitheatre, O'Connell St. etc) and doing their free show for the public. These shows will take place on Friday the 4th August at lunch time and in the evening. As you will see from the video the performers themselves are incredibly visual and we are looking for photographers to take picture of them at each of the locations for us.

The festival organisers are not paying themselves for the years work that has gone into it as budgets are tight, and unfortunatly this is the same for the photographers. We want to make the festival work this year and then next year try to get a small wage out of it, which hopefully will mean we can do the same for the photographers.

If anyone would like to take part in this event please send a mail to me at mark@spwc.ie.

I look foward to hearing from any of you and if you can make it to Merrion Square this August bank holiday weekend , there will be some amazing shots.

Have I read the post correctly? Are you only looking for someone for the evening of the 4th or for the whole weekend?

As a working pro I would like to offer some advice to anyone supplying images for reproduction.
1 you have a right to be paid for you work !!
2 watermark all submitted images ©(your name) and also state this in a cover note/email along with words like "not for reproduction without the consent of the photographer".

I got a call awhile back form a person seeking permission to use one of my images, they stated that it must be cheap as they had very little budget for photography,..I did a few checks with some friends and found out that the company in question was one of the biggest telecom companies in the world,..needless to say I sent them packing,..

work for nothing and you'll always have a job..;)

You're probably right. I was reading on flickr that plenty companies seem to be helping themselves to pictures on there with no credit to the photographer, and no permission sought either. It's a disappointing thing to see. But when it is something local like this I'm more inclined to be a little more willing to help, as long as credit is given where it's due. Thanks for the tips too.

There would be no chance of ever making a living from my camera though, so no harm done there ;)

It's down to attitude, rather than quality of work (um, don't take that the wrong way of course!!!)

I discovered a strange thing, that you can be crap at something and cheeky enough to charge money for it that people will pay it. But you can be good at something, and too shy and not get paid for it ever. And then there are some lucky b*st*rds that are good AND get paid. Dammit.

    Hehehe a very true statement!
And then theres people like Chris Weeks who get paid insane money, put on a front to all the Hollywood peeps then laugh at them to all the people he knows in the Real World ;)
    I love that guy ;p

There's an option on Flickr that people can't download your photos...I'd advise you turn it on ;)

Thanks for being interested in this project and I really hope that you all do get shots at the festival. There was mention of a big company not paying for photos. We are a couple of 27 year old computer scientists that gave us their job a year ago to create this festival. We have not earned a penny from it. We have taken what budget we have and stretched it soooo far. We just want to put on our festival and maybe next year try to scrape a living out of it. We would love to meet us with anyone who is interested in taking shots... and you most certainly dont need to be a pro... sure, we hardly know what we are doing so it is fine if a photographer is the same. mark

If I'm in town that weekend, and it's not pissing down rain, I'll definitely be swinging by to check things out, D50 in tow. And if I get any good shots, I'll be sure to send em along for your perusal (with the obvious requirement of credit being given, but I don't need the cash for something that I'd be doing for fun ANY WAY).
