Whiskey question

I want to buy my dad a good present, as he just recently bailed me out of some financial strife. Now that I'm back on my uppers, I'm repaying the loan and would like to give him a little something extra.

He drinks whiskey, jimmy usually in pubs but likes to have a bottle of Black Bush at home at all times. I was wondering if there's any point in buying him a bottle of Midleton Rare. If he likes whiskey, is it obvious that he will love this, or is it a more acquired taste? I'm sure he'd be quite happy with a bottle of Black Bush, but I would like to say thanks.

A pal of mine got me a bottle of Midleton Rare for getting him sorted with a job. Very much appreciated it was too!
That said, I'd prefer a good ol' bottle of Redbreast any day.
Instead of lashing out on the Midleton - why not buy him a bottle of 12-year-old Jamesons & a bottle of Green Bush. He'll get two decent bottles of whiskey (& brands he likes) & you'll save yourself a few bob.

    I'm a whiskey drinker myself.
I can say the different brands are very different in taste and effect,
I like a smoothe whiskey that sneaks up on you rather than the kind that hits you in the watch pocket instantly.
And cheap rail whiskey in bars I only drink if the name brand stuff is outrageously priced and I'd end up broke drinking it!

So, my advice would be to buy your dad his favorite brand. It will effect him the way he preferrs!

    Just my opinion.

Lust4Life, that's what I was afraid of, that he wouldn't be used to the 'quality' of the Midleton, and wouldn't be too enamoured with it. Or worse, he falls in love with it, and wants a bottle every shagging Christmas :D

Where would I get this 12-year old Jameson, Billy? I doubt my local "Next Door" gets much call for it. I'm just up the road from Midleton - would the distillery there do me a bottle?

I would suggest any of the following: Crested Ten, Red Breast, Jameson 12-year old, Middleton.

Any decent off license or supermarket should have it. If you get stuck you could try http://www.celticwhiskeyshop.com/

    Sláinte!

Is Crested Ten ten year old Jameson?

There is a nice bit of a ritual to a bottle of Midleton as well. They only make so many bottles a year, so with each bottle is a little invite to visit the distillary and put your name in the ledger for that year.
