SATA Drive not displaying in bios/windows

Just bought a 250gb WD SATA drive and connected it to my Gigabyte ga-7vm400am motherboard.

I have enabled "OnChip Serial ATA" in the bios (This is my first sata drive) but when I boot, It shows 2x "No Device" in the sata setting utility that displays immediately after post. In Windows the via raid controller won't start, (It just says "The Device cannot start (Code:10)" )

Also, when the machine is switched on, the Sata drive doesn't spin up (Tried using legacy and sata power, not at both time). However, when I disconnect the sata data cable the drive spins right up.

    Any idea?

It's hardly a SATA II disk?

You could try updating the motherboard bios - use the @Bios to flash in Windows. See if the bios sees the hard drive after that as at least one of the prior bios updates mentions the VIA SATA ROM being updated.

Also try installing the latest VIA chipset drivers, if that doesn't work try these instead.

    Western Digital WD2500KS Caviar SE 250GB 7200RPM SATA2/300 16MB Cache - OEM

Oh. So this drive won't work on my machine? I'm not sure if my mobo is sata or sata2. It just says "serial ATA" on the mobo box. Isn't sata2 backwards compatible with sata? =/.

edit: I placed a jumper on the drive to limit it to 1.5, and now the drive spins up from when the power is applied, but still same issues really

Nope, you're not out of luck. You proably got a little pink bag with 4 screws and a jumper in it. You put it on a header on the hard drive[instructions supplied] to make it run in SATA1 mode. Some silly VIA chipsets have problems with it.

EDIT: Jesus, I suck attyping today.
Hmm, you tried the jumper, but I've never heard of 1.5 mode.

SATA-II drives are backwards compatible with SATA-I controllers but on some SATA-II drives there is a jumper to force SATA-I operation for compatibility.

Check your HD to see if it has the jumper set it then try again in the PC.

Edit: You already did that I see but if the problems still persist try the bios update next & then the drivers, is VIA SATA controller shown in the device manager or is it still an unknown device ?

Thats because some older bios's have problems seeing sata drives above 170gigs
