    Hi all,
I have a .ie/ .eu which I am happy with for a shop site which is initially targeting the Irish market. However, the .com is gone - there may be business in the US market at a later stage. My question is:

Does the .com name have to be the same as the .ie? It would be the one site for the different domains. If I go with a different .com will this complicate site marketing? Could I go for a completly different .com name?

    Thanks

try a .biz domain, maybe it'll be still there in that

Yeah you could try another international domain like .biz or .net.

It would of course be easier if all the domains were the same, maybe there could be a way to slightly change it and then get that domain on .ie, .eu and .com, e.g. by using a hyphen (-) or an abbreviation.

The .com domain you want might be purchasable as well if you contact the domain owners.

your .com does not have to mirror your .ie legally or anything. I have blaa.ie and blaa-blaa.com registered. I orignally wanted blaablaa.com but it was parked as is blaa.com, i could have contacted the owners of the .com's regarding a purchase but i didn't see the point. Feckin' internet terrrorists i tells ya!

Yep, .ie and .com names do not need to match. I'd be wary of using a - in your .com domain tho. Especially as your looking at the us of a.

A customer of mine had the blaah-blah.com domain. When they moved into the us market, their us partners couldnt understand why there was a - in the name and kept asking why it was there. In the end they ended up buying the blaahblah.com domain.

Silly, I know and very sad, but hey thats the good ol boys for ya ;)

yeah i forgot to mention...don't use hyphens. They should never have been allowed in domain names in the first place imo, a true bastardisation of domain addresses (i have one but i hate it)

Yes, hyphens are bad news - however, in some cases there can be a good reson to put a hyphen in a domain name ;) Check this out...

A simple hyphen would go a long way in some of these URLS :
    1. A site called ‘Who Represents‘ where you can find the name of the agent that represents a celebrity. Their domain name… wait for it… is
    www.whorepresents.com

    2. Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views at
    www.expertsexchange.com

    3. Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island at
    www.penisland.net

    4. Need a therapist? Try Therapist Finder at
    www.therapistfinder.com

    5. Then of course, there’s the Italian Power Generator company…
    www.powergenitalia.com

    6. And now, we have the Mole Station Native Nursery, based in New South Wales:
    www.molestationnursery.com

    7. If you’re looking for computer software, there’s always
    www.ipanywhere.com

    8. Welcome to the First Cumming Methodist Church. Their website is
    www.cummingfirst.com

    9. Then, of course, there’s these brainless art designers, and their whacky website:
    www.speedofart.com

    10. Want to holiday in Lake Tahoe? Try their brochure website at
    www.gotahoe.com
