How do you define the word 'ghost'?

If someone asks do you believe in ghosts, what do they mean? Do we all have different ideas of what a ghost is? does it have to mean a dead person coming back to haunt or can it cover anything we dont understand?

Technically, if it means dead people then I dont believe in ghosts per se. If though it covers things we currently dont understand but maybe will someday (a bit like scooby doo) as in natural phenomena that we may know of now or may as yet not understand, forms of brain activity that somehow manipulate our reality, electro magnetic frequencies affecting the runing of our own human electro systems - if 'ghosts' can also cover ideas like that, then I do believe in ghosts.

    what do you say?

My mother is a bit of a ghoul and loves talking about ghosts etc... She once said that a ghost is like a stain of a person left behind when they die.. I thought it was a good analogy

I think it is unfourtunate they call them ghosts. I do believe in them but I would perfer to say as xzanti mother it is an imprint of the person per say. I believe we all have a soul our essenance if you will that continues after we die as if this does not exist we cease to exist, maybe its just i could not bear the thought that any loved one who has died is just gone. So many people over the world have stories to tell on this surely some of them are not making them up. I understand what you are saying about the brian thing as we really are only starting to understand our brian also. I guess it comes down to personal belief and what holds true to you.

A friend of mine sees dead people, literally. She is a stone cutter and often when walking would meet up with some one she then heard has died, now she can tell from their "demeanour" if they are dead. She often sees them too when cutting gravestones. Pays no attention to them.

I think ghosts are the resonance/residue of significant lives/events. They are kinda recordings of a person or event (eg traumatic event ) and they are held in stone, or some matter. If you walk around the old walls and building s of kilkenny you can feel the stone resonate with its secret stories, its past.

I think they are people who are afraid to go into the light and prefer to walk the earth for fear of A: Not being allowed into Heaven or B: Fear they will go to Hell.

I've met some spirits who are here not through fear of anything on the other side, just popping in for a visit or some personal reason to themselves.

If thats true then why cant they come back? Are you saying they can come to and from Heaven whenever they want? If thats true then wheres Jesus..

your taking the stand that the Catholic church and its teaching are right, while they may well be we have to accept that there are many belief systems.

I made no reference to "Heaven".

Kind of OT but just re the stain thing.. My mother once babysat for a woman on her road when she was about 13 or so and she woke up in the bed and saw a little boy and girl looking down at her with very tragic sad looks on their faces... She assumed they were ghosts and told the woman who owned the house and it turned out.. Those two children were still alive and were all grown up and they had found their mother dead in the same spot my mother was lying.. So what she thinks she was seeing was an imprint of the sorrow or whatever that was in the room when they found the mum dead... My mother is a bit phsycic I think... She used to see a lot of stuff as a child.. Not so much now though

no no nasty people, i can't imagine nasty people would see any reason for a last walk along the road etc, these I think are just people doing a "last lap of the field"

My mum "hears the banshee", She won't ever sya what exactly she experiences but I know it upsets her extremely becuase its followed almost immediately by an unexpected family death, but thats kinda OT

I have a sister who has seen a lot of spirit, as if they were in the flesh. One in particular even though he was solid was non responsive (a child) which to me suggests an imprint of energy, in a way I guess it is a form of consciousness, in that consciousness is energy but like most earthbounds, stuck in a moment, seems more appropriate. I'm sure she's had other experiences where she would beg to differe lol but it would be better to hear it from her own mouth.

I had a new next door neighbour move in about three years ago and one evening we were sitting in the back garden drinking a few housewarming wines whenI felt compelled to ask her had she "seen" anything in the house when she moved in. (she has those psychic eyes and I knew she had clear vision) She looked at me and laughed and told me that not long after she moved in she woke up one night to find and old lady standing over the end of her bed smiling at her. I explained it was the woman who had lived there previously and was probaby rightly pleased that someone was looking after the place so well. (house had been left disused for a few years and rented out and hadn't been cared for, wheras the neighbour had bought it and overhauled the place to pristine condition) she nodded saying she wasn't afraid and felt that she had received her blessing.

As for soul energy and the concept of those we love continuing on, Three months after my father passed I woke up to hear him calling out my name. I know I was awake as I sat up on my elbows and questioned if I was hearing things. Then I heard him tell me to "come back" so I lay back down and closed my eyes again and instantly found myself with him. It was as if he were right there with me and I couldn't believe I was there with him. He said, "I bet you didn't expect to see me here" I really wasn't expecting it and was totally gobsmaked at the thought. I had very much accepted his death and wasn't prepared to see him again. I contacted my mother the next day to tel her about my dream and she paused only to tell me that she had just got off the phone with my sister who had just called to say the same thing. (the one who sees spirit)

At that point I felt had a fuller understanding of the nature of spirit and soul, without the complexities of over analysis and found it easy to accept. Theres a very simple concept at the heart of it all, just wish I could remember.
