about 4 or 5 years ago when we bought our house we were renovating it before moving in and in the meantime we were staying at the in-laws which was about 4 miles from the house being renovated.

Anyway, at this time there was myself and the two kids in the house - my wife and her parents had gone out for the evening.

It was about 9.30 pm and I had to start work the next day at 5.30am so I was in bed. inthe room next to me were the two kids. we were upstairs i na small 2 up, 2 down standard council house which was pretty small. the stairs led up, came onto a very small corridor on the right of which was my room and at the end was the boys room. opposite my room was another room and the bathroom.

Anyway that was the scene. What we heard (both msyelf and the kids) was the sound of someone slowly and heavily walking up the stairs (we could hear the last four or five footfalls) then heavy footsteps down the hall way and the hallway light (right outside my door) being switched.

I was obviously on alert the minute i heard this as I knew there was no-one else in the hosue so I got up and quickly opened the door. a t the same time the kdis opened their door and we were all looking out into the hall but there was no-one there. I legged it downstairs and done a complete check of the house but it was as locked up as it had been before I'd went to bed. I ended up telling the kids it was their grandad who popped back for something as they were freaking out a bit. twas weird. never found out what it was and my wife insists as kids neither she nor her family ever had any experiences of ghosts in that house.

This is another great experience, people on here seem to have had alot happen in there lives and yet its still not something thats discussed in "polite society"?

Would be great if you could copy this into the experiences thread here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054896242

yeah it's a great story, very similar to many others we have all heard. I'd say its the most common of any reported experience. Also anyone I know who has experienced these things have spoken about them to a degree that they are are not a big deal.
I mean how many times can we hear about footsteps in an empty room before is becomes an everyday normal story. This is not to take from your experience my_house please don't take it that way. It's more aimed at the kind of attitude that people can't talk about these experiences.
I have always found that people do, so I guess I disagree with you on this one 6th I don't think that such topics are excluded from "polite society" I just think that such commonly reported experiences are boring to people and unless it's a bit different it will be more difficult to work into a conversation.
Once again my_house don't take it the wrong way it's is not aimed at you .

    none taken.

the way I see it is that recounting these things isnt for popularity stakes - its to see if anyone can shed any sort of light on the subject. I know its been bugging me for years trying to figure out exactly what it was and I doubt I'll ever find out.

Same time though it intrigues me how normally people who experience these things tend to experiences multiple occurances throughout their lives. I could tell you about the poltergeist I experienced in Derry, the weird things that happen in the house I was born in, the strange happenings around the house i currently live in - its weird how some people dont experience anything and others seem to have experiences every few years.

It makes one wonder if these things arent really connected to the person and the mind after all.

Yeah I see where you are coming from, my grandfather had loads of stories, right down to having conversations with ghosts etc but nobody else ever saw them with him. He is dead now, but I remember him coming in telling us that he saw a ghost walking up the road etc while he was out for a walk. It could be that we have all walked past things and not known that we were seeing something, or maybe some just people do and some don't. He was not one for talking he was a simple down to earth country man and had no opinion on what he saw apart from stating the facts. I have never experienced much myself but that could also be considered as some form of luck depending on how you look at things.
