Oh there are a few alright... The secuirity guards in my building are certainly on the chunky side.

    Hah, excellent question.

I suppose most of them are young and young people in bad economies tend to be thin because of the kind of lifestyles they live. These workers dont typically sit behind an office desk and dont typically live sedentary lifestyles. They probably eat less processed foot also. Obesity is a scourge of the wealthy western nations. Thats my opinion anyway.

Oh obesity is a fairly big problem in Poland actually.

Not where I work, Full Irish breakfasts and a mountain of chips with gravy for lunch are the order of the day. Just waiting for one of them to explode.....

Although not Polish in the slightest, I feel sad about the topic of this thread. How would someone who is Polish feel about reading it, regardless of being thin, fat or someplace inbetween?

Furthermore, these boards are seen around the world. What image does it project about Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,556 ✭✭✭Slunk

How would they feel? Dont think it would matter to them. I dont get upset or have any particular feeling if a thread pops up about fat/thin Irish people so why should they get upset about a fat/thin polish people thread?

Yep.. the only people who could be offended about this thread are fat people, as the thread seems to be implying that there is something wrong with being fat.

Well, perhaps you have a strong sense of self esteem? Some people don't for various reasons. National origin or racial stereotyping hurts them. For example, in the States we have Native American people (the original people of the Americas). People are always making drunken Indian jokes. Sure, you might say, "Well then they should control their drinking." But what about their children who visit the boards and have a drunken parent? Does this make them feel good? Does this help them build their self esteem?

Now, if a Polish child were visiting this thread, how would they feel being singled out by National Origin?

*Not that it should make any difference to our discussion, but as a point of information, I am thin and not fat, workout daily, and instruct and compete in taekwondo.

No I think this is a very good question. very observant because its true in most cases, and I hadnt noticed it. People in ireland are generally more obese, clearly its a sign of a mature healthy economy though not a healthy workforce. We were more similar to the Polish ten or twelve years ago, compare young people now and then. There must be some sort of financial maths formula whereby the decreasing b/wt of the workforce is inversely proportional to economic growth and interest rates, im sure of it!

I dont think this thread is offensive in the slightest. And by the way there is something wrong with being fat - health problems.

I think most Eastern European people are slim because they grew up in a countries where food shortages were common and you basically ate what you were given. Its the same as the people who were born during and after WW2 in Britain as they had rationing up until 1953 and their diets were very bland. Thats why the Twiggy type model became fashionable because more young girls had these scrawy figures.

If these people have children here they will be just as fat as our kids if they continue to eat what we do.

if they were fatties they might get upset, but most poles are skinny...and tall :D

I saw one get through the other day but the others killed him and feasted on him. Nature can be so cruel :(

But really, the Polish people we see are thinner because they tend to be from the young generation. Middle age spread hasn't hit them yet.

I know a very fat Pole (albeit a gypsy Pole). Hes known as Tony Soprano as theyre similiarly built, receding hairline and have a shared interest in crime (though tbh this guy isnt exactly the brightest bulb on the tree, he got sacked from his supermarket job for stealing 50 bottles of that Danone stuff)

    Now dats gangsta

Oh ferchrissakes dont be so bloody precious, it's a tongue in cheek after hours post, its a semi serious mildly diverting thread....any half sane Polish person reading this will probably chuckle and post a counter thread asking why there are no thin, non-alcoholic Irish....its all in jest. Humourless political correctness is on the rampage in ireland at the moment and we certainly dont feckin' need any of it here.

ah but there is....I saw them. On a side note, my bro works with one. He works his hole off and for lunch he has one lettuce sandwich with no butter, and he was also in the army. Skinny out. but there is some fat ones trust me...

I don't reckon the fat to thin ratio is any lower than it is for the Irish in the 20-30 age group. Even where I work (IT), I don't see that many fat young guys about.

And all the Polish who come over are young guys.

Please forgive me as I intented no insult!

It was an observation meant in light humor! But aswel there is probably as some have said a reason for it. I think that as the same in my country that there is economics involved. people have said it is the migrant age group but in Dublin the same age group is alot of fat people.

Most eastern countires are poor in a social sense and like in Ireland in the 1980 era eating out was a treat but now it is common place.

But again was just a light hearted obsevation. It is sad some people had to take serious opinions on it. I am not racist no did I mean to insult people from Poland!

Please fat people do not take offence from my thread!
