Was there back in December - great place. . stayed at the IBIS Hotel (www.ibishotel.com) - is by the World Trade Centre, its just off the Sheikh Zayed Road.

Youll need to get taxis to places you want to go (shopping centres/beaches etc) but thats the norm in Dubai, they are all regulated and metered. . .they don't rip off tourists either.

Things you should do. . .a desert safari, either same day or an overnighter. Go the the Mall of the Emeriates (which has the inside man made ski slopes)

The IBIS sorted me out with all tours, they also do free pickup/dropoffs to/from the airport along with to the beach and shopping centres. With the tours (like the desert trip, they pick up up from the hotel at 3pm and drop you back about 9pm, a traditional arabic dinner under the stars is included)

Have a look at www.tripadvisor.com (type in Dubai). . .I talk a Lonley Planet city guide (Dubai) - was worth its weight in gold.

Theres also one of the hop on /hop off bus tours which leaves from the on of the big shoppng centres. . .I did it, very worthwhile.

    Burj Al Arab, 7 Stars
    Jumeirah Beach Road, , Dubai, U A EMIRATES :D:D:D

Burj Al Arab Hotel Lounge Under Water Restaurant Ballroom Meeting Room Spa Reception Indoor Pool Heliport
The worlds only seven star hotel, which has become an International landmark.

The Burj Al Arab towers soaring 321 meters, above the Arabian Gulf. This unique billowing sail-shaped building stands proudly on a man-made island some 280 meters offshore, linked to the mainland by a slender, gently curving causeway.
It is a dramatic tribute to the region's seafaring heritage. Combining the latest technology with a long-standing reputation of Arabian hospitality, the hotel symbolizes the very essence of Dubai. It embraces the best of the new alongside traditions of the past.

Individual service and attention to detail are paramount, with a private reception area on each floor, as well as a butler service for every suite. Burj Al Arab is setting new standards of luxury, service, and comfort on the shores of the Arabian Gulf.

Six restaurants and lounges provide a variety of dining options, from an underwater seafood restaurant called Al Mahara (accessible by a three minute simulated submarine voyage), to the heights of Al Muntaha, located on the top level of the hotel. Other fine restaurants include Al Iwan, Bab Al Yam, and Sahn Eddar.

The Assawan Spa & Health Club is located on the 18th floor, and its unique location allows guest to enjoy spectacular views from the pools, Jacuzzi, spas, therapy rooms, and aerobics workout studios.

Three fully equipped conference rooms are situated on the 27th floor, as are two Arabic and Western decorated boardrooms with seating for twenty. The gold domed Al Falak Ballroom is multi-functional and can be configured for a 200-person lunch or dinner, or alternatively accommodate 400 people for cocktails.

    Burj Al Arab, 7 Stars

I've seen this on several different tv programs and TBH, it looks tacky.

Something about it just screams Las Vegas.

You haven't indicated budget but if it can stretch, try the 5-star Jumeirah Beach Hotel - the breaking wave shaped hotel beside the Burj Al Arab.

Stayed there earlier this year, absolutely fantastic facilities and service. Booked on hotels.com, where rates were actually cheaper than the hotel's website.

    Highlights of hotel were:
    - the seriously cool 360 Bar at the end of the breakwater, and Uptown Bar on the 28th Floor
    - free unlimited entry to the adjoining Wild Wadi Water Park: CLASS!
    - some of the restaurants were excellent, including the Waterfront and Marina Seafood
    - the swim-up pool bar
    - the treats at poolside - guy comes around spraying you down with ice water when too hot...
    - free buggy service around complex, including to the Burj Al Arab and Madinat
    - free entry to Burj Al Arab
    - large rooms, some with balcony

In general, with all the construction at the moment, I'd recommend going for the beach hotels, otherwise you'll be stuck in traffic a lot of the time.

Also, trips like desert dune bashing, bedouin camel trips, or even hiring a car and going to somewhere like Hatta or Khorfakkan are recommended.

Agree with most of that. The Jumeirah Beach is a great hotel, I stayed there is 1998, It had just opened, we paid £33 a night.

I was in Dubai again last summer. We opted to stay in the city, I am pleased that we did. We stayed at a place called Le Meridied Dubai. It was an excellent hotel in a good location. We went down to the beach for a day and there is a lot of building going on. I preferred staying in the city as there is a lot more dining options and shopping.

is the jumereiah beach far from the city?

Cyrus-Jumeirah Beach is about half an hour from the centre of the city if there is no heavy traffic. Basically its like staying in a suburb, how long it takes to get into the centre depends on traffic.

Sharkman-you wont be disappointed-we visited Mina a Salam one night and it was absolutely amazing

might try le meridien then seems to be ideally placed, its gonna be too hot in late sept to hang at the beach me thinks

If you stay at the Meridien in the city you get access to all the facilites at Le Royal Meridien which is at Jumeirah beach. If I remember correctly there is also a free shuttle bus. Taxis are dirt cheap anyway. Traffic is horrendous!
