I am intrigued as to what other people thought about watching the world cup in HD (for those who were fortunate to get it through SKY Sports).

Was it really marketing hype or was there a significant difference to warrant the cost of the new set??

Was the World Cup better in HD?? 15 votes

Yes it was, worth all the €000's

HD coverage of the world cup is on BBC HD, not Sky Sports. Wimbledon's pretty good in HD as well.

It will be once RTÉ get up off their arse and start broadcasting in HighDef and move over from the old analogue signal to a digital signal. And we actually start recieving HD signals. But honestly, can you even see RTÉ putting money into infrastructure? They seem to think it can do better in Pat Kenny's pocket.

If you have watched a High Def show then you will notice the difference. They are fantastic.

Anyway, shouldnt this be in the Television forum?

I watched one match in a friends house who had HD and tbh it's a pile of overexpensive hype.

That France v Brazil game was worth watching on a crackly black and white TV if it came to it, classic football. I dont see the attraction of these technologies unless youre into that sort of thing tbh

Considering when you buy a TV nowadays, its pretty much going to be a HD TV. The price will come down on the Sky boxes etc and it will be a technology that you dont even notice anymore.

Might as well have it, as have not...it.

I got a HD telly lately, and an xbox 360. I've only really seen HD content on the xbox, and it's incredible. I've ordered a sky HD box, but it's not coming till september, so I'll let ye know then :D

They do. We had access to it on our UK Sky Boxes (I work in a TV station).

World Cup in HD was only shown on the BBC HD channel in the UK and indeed Ireland via Other Channels.

Sky Sports did not have rights to World Cup coverage, at least live anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

indeed they didnt. BBC, UKTV and ITV had the live rights. BBC only showed it in HD via satellite and also cable in the UK. ITV also showed it in HD via cable in the UK

no it's next years prem noit the world cup, but
yeah they are in HD but they didn't expand that to Sky Ireland mate, thats all, you're right in saying that BSKYB broadcast in HD just not to ireland

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Sky Sports HD is available to Ireland

    what are you on about?

Yup, all HD channels broadcast by Sky digital are available in both UK and Ireland. BBC HD is unofficially available via Other Channels route.

cause early last year they said they wouldn'r have HD in ireland until after it was in place in the UK , didn't know they 'd changed their mind.

Sky had no rights to the World Cup so I dont know how they could show it in HD when they couldnt show any matchs in analogue or anything

    imo...

with the quality of these new tele's anyway, its hard to tell the difference with HD. last night myself and a friend were flicking from Sky One to Sky One HD (42" plasma) and the difference was minute is anything. if i walked into the room not knowing if it was Sky One or Sky One HD i wouldn't ba able to tell the difference. When flicking, you can notice and hear it.

if anyone has seen the Ad on Sky One promoting HD with the colorful background? Well that really reaps the benefits when shown on HD tv. You can notice the difference there. I found you can notice the difference with certain sound of stuff and visual stuff. a guy reading the news imo isn't gonna be more mind blowing.

Some of the digital channels however have a terrible quality. noticed that last nite. was watching poker and i couldnt even make out the cards, albeit they wern't close up shots but terrible quality.

was it a HD programme playing on Sky One HD? some of the programming is still SD rather than HD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭digiman

I am in the US and have been watching the world cup on ABC HD and it really is amazing, it really would be worth the money I think, I have seen a few reruns of Lost and some other shows like My Name is Earl and the Office and they all look fantastic in HD. What I thought was the best of all was the basketball finals in HD, it really was such a vivid and colour full picture. Over in the US they have so much HD stuff as well to show which makes it alot better as well.
It would definetly make me spend 3000 on a new HD tv setup

HD is worth it.I was a non-believer before I purchased my Bravia but must say that my mind has changed.

My 360 looks amazing and so do all the trailers etc that I download
My Pc on it leaps out from the screen nearly(u know what I mean)
And Sky HD will grow.I watched Cricket last week...cricket..!!!!
Only because it looked so nice

Lads where would I find something to play on my HD tv? As in, sort of a test? Any channels?

Because the only HD thing I've seen on it is my Xbox 360, which is lovely, but I don't play that - ever - so the HD in my current circumstance was a complete waste of money....:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,707 ✭✭✭skywalker

The movie trailers and such you get through xbox live are high def.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

Last march i rang the number that appeared when i went onto sky hd channels and sky told me all i needed was a HD tv to get these channels
€1800 later and another phone call to sky and i found out that i now needed to spend another €450 or something like that on a new sky hd box plus more for a new HD subscription Ba***rds!!
Now im stuck with a top of the range HD tv and no use for it at the moment
saving up for the sky hd thing

And remember, on top of the €449 for the SkyHD box, you pay an additional monthly fee of €15 for the HD channels. Ludicrous yes, but that's the way!

at least the BBC HD will be free. wonder if ITV HD will make it onto satellite soon

You guys realise there are different types of HD, right? Most of the HD TVs being sold at the moment only support 720 lines of vertical resolution - they're technically 'HD Ready' but can't handle high resolution HDTV. Take a look at this diagram from Wikipedia:

    480px-Standard_video_res.svg.png

1280 X 780 pixels is what most of you dudes are getting now. Not much difference between that and regular TV (768 X 576). But compare PAL to the full resolution High Def of 1980 X 1080 - big, BIG difference.

You just need proper HD TVs and high resolution feeds. Sorry guys.

    as brilliant as hd is
it cant justify the price of buying a sky hd box no way

As much as 1080p would be great, but even SkyHD isn't 1080p. It's either 1080i or 720p

Can I ask what is the difference between 1080i & 1080p?

    My own TV allows 1920 x 1080i

interlaced and progressive - its how the picture is drawn and p is better...
most hdtvs are 1080i at the moment

1080p tvs are rare and expensive at the moment...

my own is 1080i and i thought about waiting but tbh you could easily end up waiting forever for these things :)

I have around 4gb of HD material that you can play through your PC to the display.
They are off retailers HD demos like sony, Hitachi etc. And a few music videos and recording off US HD tv.
They are all .ts files so you can use videolan to play them.

I'll probably try and upload them online or post them to you when I get some blank dvds :D

Any shops in dublin with it set up so I can see a demo? I really think its gonna be years before this thing takes off and very gradually at that. But Id love to be proved wrong.

Europe have been late getting it compared to say the US or Japan

as soon as the cost comes down i think it will become the norm. i remember when people said digital tv was pointless
