Today is the day, all going well.
20:47 is the launch time and we might see it in our skies 15 or so mins after launch low in the south.

See ww.nasa.gov for live video coverage and more.

It should pass over Ireland also and then follow ISS at 22.52 going from WSW to SSW

They've discovered a 4-5 inch crack in the foam around the fuel tank. They've to decide whether to risk the launch tomorrow, or try a repair which will delay the launch further.

why does it take three days to get to the space station

why does it take three days to get to the space station

It saves on fuel if they gradually catch up to the space station rather than fly directly towards it. Also if they orbit the earth a few times in the docking process they don't have to launch the shuttle at too tight a specific time. And also, gradually catching up to the ISS allows them time to align the shuttle properly and test the docking process before hand.
