I don't know why people get so confused about this... it's really not that hard...

No, you can't have your cake and eat it.... well.... as far as the meaning behind the expression goes anyway

If you have it, then you've eaten it... so no...

''You have the cake and it''
''You have your cake and eat it''

That's where people get confused if it's your cake then the term have would automatically mean to eat it.

    Ok...

You're sitting at home with a lovely big cake... it looks lovely... with those little flowery things and maybe some pink icing.

    ...You have a cake

    Then you eat it...

    ... You don't have a cake

So the answer is NO, you cannot have your cake AND eat it... it's impossible

Unless having it in your stomach counts, but for the sake of the meaning of this expression... it doesnt

I think we've the same point but we explained it differently

ah ffs, if you eat your cake you wont have it anymore...

    ya know it, ya know
    ya know it, ya know
    ya know it, ya know

    Yes. Just replicate it first.

    Steps...

    1. get a cake
    2. eat the cake
    3. cake is no longer present

therefore, if you eat the cake, then you not longer have it (in your hands, anyway. poo doesn't count).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

but before it turns to poo you're holding the cake inside of you THUS you CAN have your cake and eat it! *\o/*

Cloning wouldn't work, because it'd being in the whole multiple cake idea. Which would in turn result in the eating of said cake(s) for all eternity.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭Diarmiud

Of course you can have your cake and eat it. Some of it is going to be digested and incorporated into your body, so it still will be present. Sheesh!

What happens if you eat only half of your cake?

(Which is a tremendous waste of precious cakealitic resources, but anywho)

I play for pay. In other words, I enjoy acting and someone now pays me to do it, whereas, awhile back I volunteered to act without pay.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Dooom

So..you pretend to eat cake and you get payed to do it? Or do you have to eat the cake aswell?

    Humour?:D

Whassat got to do with the price of haddock?

I thought this was a literal thing... I get paid to play music. I guess that counts as possessing a cake and at the sametime, masticating it. If you want to go down that route.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭Diarmiud

Humour? Ahm, yes, there is a possiblity that the molecules of the cake could become part of the various body humours. Bile, gastric acids, etc.

Inciidently, does the thread title become irrelevant when translated ino Irish? There is no verb for "to have" as gaelige, so technically one coould only eat theiir caca mileas.

That makes me pretty upset for the gaelgoiri.

We should set up a charity

Could you not use "to own" or "to belong to" instead of "to have"?

I always knew that purple monkey as going to get it's revenge on the invisible pineapple.

Pillowman: A practical man? The chemical composition of cake and how it's absorbed into the body? How about the more touchy feely things in life, like a met a phor?

Hmmm...the cchicken and the egg solved their connundrum by making love. Therefore, the "have" should seduce "eat" and see which comes out on top?

Well, that is the solution so. Dont eat it, or have it, just heat it. (I'm puttiing out fires everywhere)

No, but... you can have you cake and then eat it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭Diarmiud

That "then" is an unwelcome interloper. Begone, I say!

Yeah. That "then" is, like, soooo off topic. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭Diarmiud

That reminds me of seperate issue. Could one haave a "topic" and eat it?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

Snap it in half? And never eat the second half? I believe I said that about the cake. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Dooom

    So..have and eat.
    Haveeat.
    Haveat.
    Have at.
    Have at you!
So that's where than phrase comes from. Word.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM
